KANSAS CITY, MO -- Kal Miller took home his second consecutive first-place titles at the second annual Tiger Style Invite on Saturday. Miller won his championship bout in thrilling style, needing three overtimes to secure the win by tiebreaker in his hometown over Missouri's Josh Edmond, the 16th-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds.
Miller won his first bout by decision and the second by injury default to take his spot in the championship.
Jaxon Smith and Seth Nevills both finished in second, each getting impressive victories to make the finals before falling narrowly to ranked opponents.
Smith's day didn't start until the semifinals and he needed just 32 seconds to collect a fall and advance to the finals. Nevills was dominant all day, winning his first two by technical falls with a combined 33-1 score. He then earned an impressive 9-3 decision over 27th-ranked Josiah Hill from Little Rock to earn a spot in the championship bout.
After dropping their first matches of the day, Gaven Bell (165) and Chase Mielnik (184) both rebounded well, winning two matches to put themselves in position to take home third place, before falling in those bouts.
The Terps' trio of true freshman 141-pounders (Dario Lemus, Michael Pizzuto, Clayton Gabrielson) impressed in Kansas City, as each one won at least two matches. Lemus and Pizzuto met in the third-place bout, with Lemus coming out on top. Gabrielson put himself into the seventh-place match, ultimately dropping a hard-fought and high-scoring bout.
Dom Solis won three matches, including two major decisions, and took home fifth-place.
Conner Quinn picked up two victories on the day to take seventh-place.
Overall, 14 of the 17 Terps who wrestled placed. Maryland finished with 114.5 team points and finished fourth.
