COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 2 Maryland opened its 50th season of women's lacrosse in style with a 15-5 victory over Saint Joseph's at SECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Terps had two different six-goal runs to take control of the game.
"Great start today for the Terps," said head coach
Cathy Reese. "We saw a lot of players making an impact all over the field.
Emily Sterling was phenomenal in the goal cage to really anchor our defense. We did a great job clearing the ball today, really holding onto it and possessing it, that's something we've been focusing on. Then offensively, we saw a lot of different things from a lot of different players. It's nice to see different people contributing, nine different goal scorers."
The Terps (1-0) had nine goal scorers led by Chrissy Thomas and Jordyn Lipkin, who each had hat tricks. For the junior Thomas, the tallies were the first of her collegiate career.
Freshman Jaylen Rosga scored two goals in her first collegiate game while Hannah Leubecker also scored twice.
Eloise Clevenger had five points on a goal and four assists. The four assists equaled her career-high.
Emily Sterling made eight saves in the goal before giving way to Julia Hammerschlag, who made her Terps' debut between the pipes.
