IOWA CITY, IA -- No. 8 Maryland cut a 20-point deficit into just 10 points in both the third and fourth quarters, but could not stop Caitlin Clark and the potent Iowa offense down the stretch, ultimately falling 96-82.
Diamond Miller (27), Shyanne Sellers (career-high 26), and Abby Meyers (15) combined for 68 points to lead the Terps. Sellers also added six boards and three steals while Meyers grabbed seven rebounds.
Elisa Pinzan scored the 1,000th point of her career on a layup in the third quarter. Faith Masonius turned in a solid all-around assist with six points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.
It was the first time this season Maryland had two players score 20-plus points.
Clark was lights-out for the Hawkeyes all night, totaling 42 points on 13-of-19 shooting, including six triples. Monika Czinano also had a huge night, making 14-of-18 attempts from the floor for a total of 28 points to go along with six rebounds.
With the loss, the Terps are now 18-5 on the season, including a 9-3 mark in the Big Ten. Iowa is 18-4 overall and 10-1 in conference play.
Maryland is tied with Ohio State for third in the Big Ten and the teams will face each other on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. The game will be the annual "Pink Game" with Play4Kay as well as celebrating Black History Month and National Girls and Women's and Sports Day.
Brenda's Take
"A really rough, uncharacteristic start in the first quarter, which obviously impacted the results of the game. Going 1-for-9 in that first quarter is really unlike us. Diamond's foul with 40 seconds really impacted our team and they came out and were really aggressive. They came out and were on fire in the first half which was difficult for us in every regard...Proud of the second half; we won the second half. I loved our bounce-back in the locker room, just a little bit too much of a gap. You can't spot a team like Iowa the amount of points we did in the first half."
