May & Ahearn Earn National, Big Ten Player of the Week Honors

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Attacker Libby May and midfielder Shaylan Ahearn earned both national and conference weekly honors, the IWLCA and Big Ten announced on Tuesday.

May was named both the IWLCA Co-Offensive National Player of the Week and the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week while Ahearn was selected as the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week. This is May's first IWLCA National honor and second Big Ten Weekly honor (4/26/22), while Ahearn picks up her third Big Ten Midfielder of the Week honor (2/22/22 & 3/1/22).

A senior attacker, May helped lead the No. 5 Terps to a pair of road wins at Drexel and No. 7 Florida, totaling 12 goals on the week, six goals in each game. In Maryland's win at No. 7 Florida, May  scored six of Maryland's 14 goals to pace the offense, setting the tone early, scoring four goals in the first 16 minutes of play to give the Terps an 8-4 lead. May also six goals in a 15-9 win at Drexel earlier in the week to pace the Maryland offense, putting home six goals on only nine shots. The Sparks, MD native led all Big Ten players in goals this past week and now stands fourth in the conference and 16th in the nation with 15 goals on the season.

A senior midfielder, Ahearn tallied 20 draw controls, six groundballs and two goals in the Terps wins at No. 7 Florida and Drexel. Ahearn matched a career-high with 14 draw controls in win at Drexel, including the 200th of her career, only the sixth Terp ever to reach 200 draw controls and then passed Dana Dobbie for fifth all-time in the win at Florida. With the score tied and 1:19 remaining at Florida, Ahearn won the draw control that gave the Terps possession and led to the game winning goal with 17 seconds left as part of a game where the Terps won the draw control battle 16-14. The senior also picked up three groundballs in both games and now leads the Big Ten with 28 draw controls on the season.

May and Ahearn will be back in action Wednesday, March 1 as the Terps travel to No. 12 James Madison to face the Dukes at 5:00 p.m. The game will air on ESPN Plus.
