The Matchup
- Maryland baseball travels to Columbus, Ohio for a three-game series with the Ohio State Buckeyes. All three games will be available to for streaming and on the Maryland Baseball Network. Friday's matchup is available live on Big Ten Network.
- Maryland and Ohio State meet for the 25th time overall with the Terps sweeping the previous two series 3-0, in 2021 and 2022. This includes an 8-6 walk-off victory on April 15, 2022 thanks to a three-run home run from Bobby Zmarzlak in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- Ohio State (17-15) comes into the weekend after dropping two-of-three to Michigan State in East Lansing. The Buckeyes however are riding a two-game win streak after taking wins over Akron (15-1) and Bowling Green (8-2) in their midweek matchups.
- The Buckeyes have utilized a balanced offensive attack as four players in the lineup are currently batting over .300 and eight have recorded 15-plus RBI so far this season.
So Far This Season
- Maryland claimed it's fifth consecutive series win after taking two-of-three games over Rutgers in their Big Ten home opener. The Terps used quality outings from starters Jason Savacool and Nick Dean to edge out two tight victories on Friday (6-4) and Saturday (4-3).
- The Terps began conference play by taking two-of-three against No. 22 Iowa at Duane Banks Field. The series was highlighted by a back-forth-battle on Friday that saw the Terps come back from a five-run deficit and Matt Shaw hit a 507 ft grand slam to re-claim the Terp lead.
- Maryland took two-of-three against UCF in Orlando, Fla for their final non-conference series of the year. The Terps dropped the Friday night matchup but scored 24 runs over the next two games and took the series with an 8-6 victory on Sunday.
- The Terps claimed two-of-three against UAlbany at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Nick Lorusso was a consistent force for the Terps at the plate, batting .455 with three doubles and five RBI over the weekend.
- Maryland claimed its first series sweep of the 2023 campaign, taking all three games against Maine. The series was highlighted by a 25-run explosion on Friday night that included back-to-back home runs from Nick Lorusso and Matt Shaw in both the first and third inning.
- Maryland claimed an 8-3 victory over Delaware in a midweek matchup. Ian Petrutz came away with his fifth home run in his first eight games while Elijah Lambros smashed a two-run blast for his third home run as a Terp.
- Maryland traveled to Oxford, Mississipi taking 1-of-3 against the No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels in a weekend series. Ian Petrutz and Jason Savacool led the Terps to a Friday night victory as Petrutz went 3-for-4 with his second grand slam of the season, two runs scored and four RBI. Savacool was dynamite on the mound striking out nine Ole Miss hitters in seven innings of work, giving up just one earned run and two runs overall.
- The Terps opened 2023 with a series victory over South Florida in Tampa. The weekend was highlighted by three consecutive games with a grand slam for Maryland.
Popular in the preseason
- Maryland entered the 2023 season as a consensus top-25 program and the No. 13 team in the country according to D1Baseball.
- Three Terps, Jason Savacool, Matt Shaw and Luke Shliger each earned preseason All American honors. The trio received recognition from D1Baseball, Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball News. Shaw was also named a preseason All-American by Baseball America.
- Juniors Luke Shliger (No. 1), Matt Shaw (No. 3) and Jason Savacool (No. 10) were each ranked in the Top-10 for their position by D1Baseball heading into the 2023 campaign.
- Maryland comes into 2023 fresh off winning its first-ever Big Ten Championship in 2022 and first conference title in more than a half-century since the Terps won the ACC in 1971. Overall, it was Maryland's fifth conference crown.
- The Terps return 15 players from last year's squad including six All-Big Ten honorees (Jason Savacool, Nick Lorusso, Matt Shaw, Kevin Keister, Luke Shliger, and Nick Dean).
- Maryland welcomes incoming transfers Matt Woods (Bryant), Elijah Lambros (South Carolina), Tommy Kane (Rowan), Eddie Hacopian (Cypress College) and Nate Haberthier (Ohio State), who all figure to make an immediate impact in College Park this season.
Meet the Coaches
- Sixth-year Head Coach Rob Vaughn returns as skipper after last season's Big Ten Championship and receiving conference Coach of the Year honors. Vaughn is a career 160-109 (.595) as the Head Coach of the Terps.
- Matt Swope and Anthony Papio return to the bench this year for Maryland, they bring a wealth of experience to the dugout as both Terrapin baseball alumni and veteran coaches on staff.
- Mike Morrison returns as assistant for his second season with the Terps. Morrison joined the staff from Coastal Carolina, where won a national championship as a player in 2016 and spent two years as Director of Player Development and Scouting of the Chanticleers, as well as interim pitching coach.
- Former Maryland baseball player Tommy Gardiner is back with the staff and serves as Director of Player Development after spending four seasons playing under Vaughn, Swope, and Papio.
