Terps Conquer George Washington, 15-8, In Midweek Action

ARLINGTON, VA – With a trio of home runs, Maryland baseball slugged its way to a midweek victory over George Washington, 15-8, Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Bancroft Park. The Terps improved to 22-14 in 2023, while the Colonials dropped to 13-25 on the year.

The Terps only recorded three extra-base hits, but Maryland made the most of its big knocks. Matt Shaw and Eddie Hacopian each hit a three-run home run, while Bobby Zmarzlak smashed a grand slam to account for 11 of the Terps' 15 runs scored. Shaw's blast was his 13th of the season and 42nd of his career as he is now just one shy of tying the school record for homers, sitting just behind Paul Schager with 43.

Hacopian reached base four times, and his four-RBI performance set a season best in that department. Shaw drove in four runs or more for the third time in 2023, going 2-for-5 to accompany his four RBI. Zmarzlak's grand slam marked the Terps' seventh of the season, giving him five RBI on the day, the most this season and the most since he drove in a career-high seven RBI during his freshman season in 2020.

Luke Shliger also added to the offensive firepower, reaching base in all six plate appearances with three singles and three walks to extend his reached-base streak to 34 games in the process.

Small ball also proved vital for the Terps, as Maryland drew a season-high walks, with eight of the nine starters coaxing a walk. On the basepaths, the team ran rampant with six stolen bases, tying a season high.

Kenny Lippman (3-0) came on in relief to earn the win, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two Colonials.
