Big Fourth Quarter Lifts No. 10 Maryland Past No. 15 Michigan, 13-7

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 10 Maryland scored five consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to pull away from the No. 15 Michigan Wolverines and win its Big Ten home opener, 13-7. The win came on the day the program celebrated its 50th season of Maryland Women's Lacrosse. 

"What a great day in College Park," said head coach Cathy Reese. "The environment was awesome, the crowd was great and having all our alums and their families on campus to celebrate 50 years of Maryland women's lacrosse is really special. I'm proud of our team's effort today. We came out against a tough Michigan team and knew it was going to be a battle. I love the way we continue to attack and we made some great defensive stops. Overall a good day." 

Libby May led the way for the Terps offensively with five goals. Chrissy Thomas notched two goals and two assists. 

Shaylan Ahearn filled up the stat sheet once again, finishing with one goal, three assists, one draw control, a groundball and a caused turnover. 

Eloise Clevenger (2G), Hannah LeubeckerVictoria Hensh and Shannon Smith also scored. Abby Bosco had another big day, finishing with seven draw controls, two groundballs and two caused turnovers. 

Emily Sterling recorded double-digit saves for the game in a row, finishing with 12. 

Maryland improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play while Michigan dropped to 9-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Big Ten. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland grabbed a 3-2 lead after the first quarter as May worked through the Wolverine defense and put one home to break a 2-2 tie.
  • Clevenger came away with a massive goal with just 11 seconds remaining in the half to give the Terps a burst of momentum heading into the locker room at the midway point of the game.
  • May came up big for the Terps with the quarter winding down as she scored off a free position shot, giving the senior attacker her seventh hat trick of the season and putting Maryland up 8-6 through 45 minutes of action. 
  • The Terps blew the game open early in the fourth with a run of four goals in a row, including two from May.

  • Ahearn holds steady at fourth in career draw controls with 269 in her career. Next on the list is Lizzie Colson, who had 324 from 2017-21. The all-time time draw controls record is held by Taylor Cummings, who had 509 from 2013-16. 
  • Sterling remained eighth in career saves with 12 in the game. She now has 424. Next up is Alexis Venechanos, who had 446 from 2000-03. The all-time saves record is held by Alex Kahoe, who had 968 from 1997-2000.

  • Clevenger (two goals) now has 10 multi-point, nine multi-assist and five multi-goal games this season in 13 games. In her career, she has 27 multi-point, 19 multi-assist and 17 multi-goal games. 
  • May (four goals) had her 10th multi-point game, ninth multi-goal game, and seventh hat trick in 13 games this season. In her career, she now has 43 multi-point games, 39 multi-goal games and 25 hat tricks in 57 career games. 
  • Leubecker (three goals, one assist) had her ninth multi-point game and eighth multi-goal game– in 10 games. In her career, she now has 41 multi-point games and 39 multi-goal games, all in 55 career games. 
  • Ahearn (one goal, three assists) recorded her sixth game in a row with multiple points and her seventh overall this season. 
  • Thomas (two goal, one assist) recorded her fifth multi-point game and third multi-goal game of the season and of her career.

50th Season Of Lacrosse
  • The 2023 season is the 50th season of Maryland women's lacrosse, a program that has been the most successful in the entire sport since its start.

The Terps have participated in 28 Final Fours, including 12 of the last 13 and have won 12 of the last 28 national championships, including seven-straight from 1995- 2001.
