No. 12 Terps Defeated By No. 2 Northwestern, 13-6

EVANSTON, IL - After playing No. 2 Northwestern to a 4-4 tie at halftime, the Wildcats pulled away in the second half to defeat No. 12 Maryland, 13-6, in the regular-season finale for both teams.  Maryland will be the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and host No. 7 seed Ohio State (5-11, 0-6) next Saturday, April 29 at SECU Stadium at a time to be announced in the Big Ten Quarterfinals.  

Shaylan Ahearn led the Terps with two goals along with five draw controls and two caused turnovers along with Chrissy Thomas, who had two goals and an assist. Eloise Clevenger had a goal and two assists for three points for Maryland. Libby May also scored a goal for the Terps to extend her point-scoring streak to 44 games. 

After the Wildcats scored the first three goals of the game in the opening 5:37, Maryland rallied back to even the game at halftime thanks to Ahearn's two goals. 

In the goal, Emily Sterling made 13 saves for the Terrapins. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • After Northwestern scored the first three goals of the game, Maryland cut the deficit to one at 3-2 on goals by Ahearn and May. Hansen's goal as time expired in the first quarter regained a two-goal edge for Northwestern. 
  • Maryland opened the second quarter with two quick goals as Ahearn and Thomas netted goals in the first 1:38 to even the score at 4-4. The defense for both teams took over from there as no one scored for the final 13:22 of the half. 
  • Northwestern scored five of the six goals in the third quarter to build a 9-5 lead heading to the fourth quarter. Rhatigan had two goals in a span of 1:13 near the end of the quarter for Northwestern. 
  • In the fourth, Northwestern scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to take a 12-5 advantage. Thomas got the Terps on the board with 1:21 left.

  • Ahearn holds steady at fourth in career draw controls with 293 in her career. Next on the list is No. 3 Lizzie Colson, who had 324 from 2017-21. The all-time time draw controls record is held by Taylor Cummings, who had 509 from 2013-16. 
  • Sterling moved to seventh in career saves with 13 in the game. She now has 456 She passed Alexis Venechanos, who had 446 from 2000-03. Next up is No. 6 Brittany Dipper, who had 490 from 2009-12. The all-time saves record is held by Alex Kahoe, who had 968 from 1997-2000.

  • Ahearn (two goals) recorded her fifth multi-goal game this season and 10th multi-point game this year. In her career, she now has 11 multi-goal games and 21 multi-point games. 
  • Clevenger (one goal, two assists) had her 12th multi-point game this season and 10 multi-assist games this year. In her career, she now has 29 multi-point games and 19 multi-assist games. 
  • Thomas (one goal, one assist) had her seventh multi-point game this season and third multi-goal game.
