Penn State Edges Maryland To Take Series, 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland led into the sixth inning, but Penn State scored two run in the frame to pick up the comeback 2-1 victory on Sunday. The Nittany Lions (26-14, 7-10) captured the series, which consisted of three one-run games. Maryland is now 31-15 and also 7-10 in the Big Ten.

Sunday's game was played in front of a season-best 1,009 fans, the most since 2019 for a Maryland home game.

Lech's team-leading 13th home run in the third inning accounted for the Terps' only run of the game. Her 13 homers are the third-most in a season in Maryland history. It was her first home run in 13 games after starting the year on a tear.

Wyche was strong in the circle early. She limited Penn State to one hit over the first five innings before giving way to Trinity Schlotterbeck in the sixth. The Nittany Lions took the lead a sacrifice fly after tying the game on an RBI single. Wyche finished throwing five innings, allowing two runs and two hits and four strikeouts.  Penn State had only three hits in the game.

Jaeda McFarland went 2-for-4 in the games. Maryland's other hits came from Kiley Goff and Sammi Woods

Breaking Down The Action
  • Lech smashed her team-leading 13th home run to put the Terps up 1-0 in the third inning.
  • Wyche escaped trouble in the fourth inning as Penn State had two runners on base before she got out of it.
  • Penn State evened the game in the sixth inning as Lexie Black singled home Liana Jones to tie it at 1-1. The Nittany Lions took their first lead of the game on a Maddie Gordon sacrifice fly to score Cassie Lindmark, making it 2-1.
  • Maryland had a chance to tie the game in the seventh as Megan Mikami drew a walk with one out and McFarland singled to give the Terps two runners but the Terps were unable to find the equalizer.
