COLLEGE PARK, MD – Despite a tremendous complete-game effort in the circle from Trinity Schlotterbeck, Maryland softball (31-16) dropped a pitcher's duel in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Wisconsin, 1-0, at Maryland Softball Stadium.
Schlotterbeck went the distance for the seventh time in the 2023 season, striking out four Badgers and holding Wisconsin scoreless for the first six innings of the game.
The decisive blow came in the seventh inning, when Wisconsin's Katie Keller drove in the lone run of the contest with a go-ahead sacrifice fly after the Badgers loaded the bases.
The Terps manufactured the first scoring threat of the contest in the bottom of the fourth, as Jaeda McFarland and Madison Runyan got Maryland in the hit column, loading the bases with two away. However, the Badgers escaped the jam unscathed with a groundout.
Maryland had a chance to respond in the bottom of the seventh as Taylor Liguori led off the frame with a pinch-hit single and Kiley Goff singled through to put two runners on base and two down, but the Terps could not level the game in the final inning.
Maddie Schwartz picked up the win for Wisconsin with a complete-game shutout, scattering five Terps hits across her seven innings of work.
