Maryland Drops Decision to Big Ten Rival Rutgers, 5-2

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Despite a commendable team effort on the road, the Terps fell to Rutgers, 5-2, in the second game of Wednesday's double-header. With the loss, Maryland moves to 26-10 (3-5 BIG) while the Scarlet Knights move to 29-12 (6-2 BIG).

After giving up a run early, Trinity Schlotterbeck locked in for the first three innings. The senior finished with 5 innings in the circle, stranding runners in multiple big moments to keep the game close. Keira Bucher came in to pitch the final inning.

The pitcher's duel held until the fourth, when Schlotterbeck and Micheala Jones both touched home to put the Terps up. The Terps offense couldn't convert for any more runs against Rutgers' tough pitching.

Shortstop Sammi Woods showed out on the defensive end, executing two clutch plays to prevent any Scarlet Knight scores in the sixth inning.

Breaking Down The Action
  • In the first inning, Taylor Liguori made a leaping grab at second base to prevent a Rutgers hit.
  • The Scarlet Knights earned a run in the first off a RBI double.
  • Maryland got on the board in the fourth, first with a Liguori RBI single to knock in Schlotterbeck from second. Campbell Kline then reached on a perfectly placed bunt, giving Jones time to score, just dodging Rutgers' attempted tag at the plate. The Terps went into the bottom of the stanza with a 2-1 lead.
  • Rutgers answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two off of a pair of RBI hits.
  • The Scarlet Knights added two more runs in the sixth, bringing the score to 5-2.
