COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland baseball dropped a 14-8 decision to Rutgers on Easter Sunday as the Terps took two of three in the weekend series between Big Ten rivals. The Terps are now 19-12 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten play. The Scarlet Knights improved to 16-15 and 2-4 in the conference.
Zach Martin continued his hot weekend with three doubles as he went 3-for-4, for his first career three-hit game. It was the first three-double game for a Terp since Chris Alleyne had three vs. Nebraska on April 9, 2021. Martin also scored four runs for a new career-high, the most for a Terp this season in a game.
Luke Shliger went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Matt Shaw was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Freshman Luke Zeisloft smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth for the first homer of his career.
Nick Lorusso extended his school-record hit streak to 30 games as he beat out a groundball for a single in the bottom of the eighth inning. He was 2-for-4 with two singles and two walks.
Rutgers broke open the game with three home runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-3 lead.
Maryland starting pitcher Kyle McCoy came out of the game in the top of the fifth after being hit with a line drive in the face. He left the game under his own power. He threw four innings, allowing eight hits and five runs. Andrew Johnson was effective coming out the bullpen, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.
Breaking Down The Action
- Hacopian doubled to the rightfield gap to score Lorusso in the bottom of the first inning to put the Terps up 1-0.
- Rutgers got on the board in the top of the second inning, evening the score at one. Luke Zeisloft made a diving catch in right to end the inning and prevent further damange
- Maryland quickly regained the lead at 2-1 as Shliger's single to center scored Zach Martin, who doubled earlier.
- The Scarlet Knights once again answered, scoring on a Maryland error, in the top of the third for a 2-2 score.
- Rutgers took a 4-2 lead as Ryan Lasko's two-run double put the Scarlet Knights in front in the top of the fourth.
- Shliger singled home Martin, who doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth, cutting the Terps' deficit to 4-3.
- The Scarlet Knights tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 6-3 advantage.
- Rutgers blasted three home runs in the top of the sixth to break open the game and lead 12-3. The Scarlet Knights scored in five consecutive innings.
- Maryland got one run back in the bottom of the sixth as Matt Shaw singled home Martin for a 12-4 score.
- Lorusso extended his hit streak in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. He was originally called out on the play, but after umpire discussion, it was ruled he was safe at first after beating out the throw from third for a single.
- Rutgers added two more runs with two outs in the ninth for the 14-4 score.
- Zeisloft's blast with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, cut the score to 14-7. Lorusso's single to third brought home Shliger making it 14-8.
