Five Terps Named To IWLCA All-Region Teams

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Five members of the Maryland women's lacrosse team were named to the IWLCA All-Mid Atlantic Region Teams, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced Thursday.
Midfielder Shaylan Ahearn, defender Abby Bosco and attacker Eloise Clevenger were named to the First Team and attacker Libby May and goaltender Emily Sterling were selected to the Second Team.
All five were also named to the All-Big Ten team, while Ahearn was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and Sterling was selected as the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year.
Ahearn has been one of the most dominant draw specialists in all of lacrosse this season, leading the Big Ten and standing 10th in the nation with 131 draw controls, currently standing fifth all-time in program history for single season draw controls. The First Team All-Big Ten selection has 313 career draw controls, the fourth-most in program history and the sixth-most of any active player The senior captain has tallied at least eight draws in eight different games and has helped Maryland win 61.9-percent of all draw controls, the fifth-best mark in the country and best in the Big Ten. Ahearn also has 20 goals, 15 assists, 13 groundballs and eight caused turnovers. She was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week five times, the most in the conference.
Bosco leads the Maryland defense, which has held 12 opponents to single digit goals this season. The graduate captain stands second in the Big Ten and top-20 in the nation with 40 caused turnovers, ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 40 groundballs and 74 draw controls. She has helped Maryland win 61.9-percent of all draw controls, the fifth-best mark in the country and best in the Big Ten. Bosco has eight games of three-plus groundballs, seven games of three-plus caused turnovers and has eight games of at least five draw controls. Bosco was a Tewaaraton Nominee, was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice this season and the Inside Lacrosse, Unleashed and IWLCA National Player of the Week once. This is Bosco's second First Team All-Region selection in a row.
Clevenger has been the leader on the Maryland attack, leading the team in both points (69) and assists (44), while standing ninth in the nation and first in the Big Ten in assists. The junior broke the Maryland single game assist record that has stood for 10 years with eight against Ohio State and has multiple assists in 11 of the 19 games she has played in. Clevenger has led Maryland in points in nine different games highlighted by her nine against Ohio State, eight against Rutgers and seven against Princeton. In conference play alone, she led the league with 15 assists and stands fourth with 23 points. Clevenger was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after her Ohio State performance.
May leads the Terps and stands third in the Big Ten with 58 goals this season and is second on the team and fifth in the conference with 63 points. The senior has at least three goals in 11 different games and has scored six goals three times, in wins over Drexel, Florida and Princeton. May has led the Terps in goals in 10 of 20 games and also has five assists, 19 groundballs, nine draw controls and two caused turnovers on the season. A two-time All-Big Ten selection, May was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice this season and the IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week once. May was also a Second Team All-Region selection last season.
Sterling has been tremendous in goal for the Terps this season, posting a .482 save percentage, 172 saves and a 9.50 goals against average. The senior captain has had over a 50-percent save percentage in 10 of 20 games and has had double digit saves in six different games including 15 against Georgetown and Princeton, 13 against Northwestern and 12 against Michigan. The reigning Big Ten Goalie of the Year has helped keep 12 opponents to single digit goals this season. Sterling has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice and the IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week once. Last season, Sterling was named the IWLCA National Goaltender of the Year.
Maryland will begin the NCAA Tournament tomorrow, May 12, as the Terps take on Drexel in the First Round at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN Plus.
