Top-Seeded Terps Edged Out by BYU, 6-4, in Second Round of NISC

Box Score FORT COLLINS, CO – Top-seeded Maryland fell to BYU, 6-4, in the second round of the National Invitational Softball Championship. The Terps will have a second chance to play today at 5 p.m. EST/3 p.m. MT against San Jose State. This was Maryland's second national postseason appearance since playing in the NCAA Tournament in 2012.

BYU jumped out to a five-run lead in the first inning off of two multi-run home runs, but the Cougars only scored one run for the remainder of the game. Facing this deficit, Maryland battled back against this tricky BYU squad to finish within only two runs of the Cougars.

Trinity Schlotterbeck started the contest for the Terps before being relieved by Keira Bucher. Bucher went on to pitch the remaining six innings in the circle, shutting out the Cougars from the third inning onwards.

Mackense Greico was responsible for all of Maryland's runs in this game, slapping an RBI double and a two-run home run. The fifth-year senior finished 2-3 with two hits and a walk. This was Greico's eighth multi-RBI game of the season.

On the defensive end, Taylor Liguori made a number of both smart and skillful plays at second base, keying the Terps' ability to stay competitive while down. Liguori's strong play prevented multiple Cougar rallies from taking hold.

With today's result, Maryland fell to 37-18 on the season, while BYU of the West Coast Conference moved to 34-16.

  • The Cougars added three more runs with a three run homer before Madison Runyan secured a pop-up for the final out.
  • BYU recorded another score in the second stanza off an RBI single.
  • Maryland got two runs back in the bottom of the third thanks to a Greico double that drove in Kiley Goff and Sammi Woods
  • Liguori executed an impressive defensive play in the fourth, firing a ball to Woods to prevent the runner on first from touching second.
  • The Terps looked to stage a two-out rally in the fourth, with both Liguori and Woods reaching base, but the Cougar defense held them off.
  • Liguori made another heads up play on defense in the fifth, securing the throw from Goff at the plate and quickly tagged second to catch a Cougar runner off the bag.
  • Maryland cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth stanza courtesy of a two-run shot by Greico, scoring Goff.
  • The Terps hoped to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh, with Goff at third and Greico at first, but Lech's six-count battle at the plate resulted in a called strikeout to end the game.
