Shaw and Vaughn Highlight Impressive Haul Of Big Ten Postseason Awards

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland baseball team earned 11 Big Ten postseason honors, including Big Ten Player and Coach of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday. The Terps' 11 awards are the most of any team in the Big Ten.

The awards are headlined by Matt Shaw taking home Big Ten Player of The Year, becoming the second consecutive Terp to take home the award, after Chris "Bubba" Alleyne won last season. Maryland is the first program with back-to-back outright Player of The Year winners in 33 years. Head coach Rob Vaughn was the unanimous selection for Big Ten Coach of the Year, winning the award for the second straight season.

Shaw has been explosive at the plate this season, batting .361 with 84 hits, 66 RBI and a Big Ten best 23 home runs. The Brimfield, Massachusetts currently sits top-25 nationally in home runs, hits and runs (74). The Maryland shortstop has left his mark on Maryland history, setting the program record in career home runs and RBI while remaining on pace to become the second straight Maryland player to record a season with 20-plus home runs and 20-plus stolen bases .He is Maryland's fourth-ever conference player of the year, joining Alleyne (2022), Derek Hacopian (1992) and Bob Grossman (1972).

Vaughn receives home Coach Of The Year honors after leading the Terps to their second consecutive conference championship and 37-19 regular season record. Under Vaughn's leadership, Maryland won its 22nd Big Ten series in a row, dating back to a sweep of Northwestern on April 24-25, 2021. The sixth-year skipper has the Terps consistantly ranked in the top-25 by multiple polls and receiving repeated national recognition on a weekly basis.

The Terps had three players earn All-Big Ten First Team selection, with Shaw (SS), Nick Lorusso (3B), and Luke Shliger (C) all earning recognition. Two Terps took home All-Big Ten Second Team honors as Jason Savacool (SP) and Ian Petrutz (DH) were each selected.

Nick Lorusso earns his second straight first-team selection in the midst of one of the best offensive seasons in Maryland and Big Ten history. Lorusso leads the nation in RBI (96) while sitting top-15 in the nation in home runs (21) and hits (89). With his six RBI across the Terps final three games, Lorusso passed Indiana's Mike Smith (1992) for the Big Ten single-season RBI record. Lorusso's 96 RBI are the most for any Division I college baseball player since 2003 when Billy Becher tallied 118 for New Mexico State. A leader on and off the field Nick Lorusso became the first Maryland baseball player to win the Big Ten Medal of Honor, the conference's most exclusive award.

Shliger has become one of the nation's best and most versatile catchers, batting .336 with 71 hits, 51 RBI and a nation-leading 87 runs. The Danbury, Connecticut native has repeatedly shown incredible ability to get on-base out of the lead-off position in the Terrapin lineup, becoming the Maryland all-time leader in runs scored and leading the team with a .519 on-base percentage. Shliger passed Associate Head Coach Matt Swope (1999-2002) who held the record with 181. The Terps catcher has donned the No. 3, being named team captain and serving as the vocal of the Dirty Terps this season.

Jason Savacool has continued to build his Maryland legacy entering the top-10 in program history in innings pitched (266.0), wins (21), and strikeouts (255). The Baldwinsville, New York native has been a work horse in the Terrapin rotation during the 2023 campaign leading the pitching in strikeouts (80) and innings pitched (83.0).

A powerful force out of the clean-up position in the Terrapin lineup Petrutz has taken a tremendous step forward during his sophomore campaign. Earning his first postseason conference honor, the Maryland designated hitter is currently batting .279 with 53 hits, 13 home runs and 50 RBI.

Elijah Lambros (OF) and Nick Dean (SP) rounded out the All-Big Ten Terps earning recognition on the All-Big Ten Third Team. Lambros earns conference honors in his first season with the Terps batting .301 with 59 hits, 14 home runs and 53 RBI. Dean earns third-team recognition for the second straight season after finishing strong down the stretch. The senior starting pitcher has earned a 2-0 record with 35.2 innings pitched, and a 3.79 ERA across during Big Ten play.

Starting pitcher Kyle McCoy received conference recognition as a All-Big Ten Freshman Team member. McCoy, who looks to feature in the Maryland rotation for years to come, has been a consistent presence as a freshman, sitting top-5 on the team in wins (4), innings pitched (52.2) and strikeouts (39).

Senior first baseman Michael Bouma earned Maryland's Sportsmanship Award, given to a player who has distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
