No. 10 Maryland Battles No. 1 Northwestern In 14-9 B1G Title Game Loss

COLUMBUS, OH Maryland led on four different occasions, but in the end No. 1 Northwestern outlasted the Terps, 14-9, in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday night at Ohio State. 

Despite the loss, Maryland (14-6) has won 11 of its last 14 games and will learn its NCAA Tournament First Round matchup on Sunday night at 9 p.m., in the NCAA Selection Show on ESPNU.  

Hannah Leubecker had her sixth hat trick of the season with three goals to lead the Terps on Saturday. Libby May and Chrissy Thomas scored two goals apiece for Maryland.  

Thomas continued her stellar play in the Big Ten Tournament as she had three total points, adding one assist, giving her 12 points in the tournament. 

Kori Edmondson and Kate Sites each added a goal for Maryland. 

In goal, Emily Sterling made nine saves. Abby Bosco had a team-best nine draw controls along with two caused turnovers. Marge Donovan also had two caused turnovers and two groundballs. 

Shaylan Ahearn, Bosco, May and Thomas were all named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • After Northwestern scored the game's first two goals in the first 4:42, Maryland answered with tallies by Thomas and May as the teams were tied 2-2 after the first quarter. 
  • In the second quarter the teams alternated the first eight goals as the game was tied at 3, 4, 5 and 6 before the Wildcats scored the final two goals of the quarter to lead 7-6 at intermission. Leubecker scored twice in the quarter for the Terps. 
  • Northwestern scored the first two goals of the third quarter for a four-goal run to lead 9-6 before Edmondson and Thomas scored for the Terps. The Wildcats led 11-8 after three quarters.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats tacked on two more goals early to make it 13-8 just 2:03 into the period. Leubecker's third of the game ended Northwestern's three-goal surge, making it 13-9.

  • May (two goals) recorded her 16th multi-point game and 15th multi-goal game, in 20 games this season. In her career, she now has 49 multi-point games and 45 multi-goal games in 64 career games. 
  • Leubecker (three goals) posted her 11th multi-point and 10th multi-goal game this season along with sixth hat trick in 17 games. In her career, she now has 43 multi-point games, 41 multi-goal games and 28 hat tricks in 61 career games.
  • Thomas (two goals, one assist) had her 10th multi-point and fifth multi-goal game this season – the only such games in her her career. 

Terps On The Charts
  • Shaylan Ahearn added to her fourth all-time career total of draw controls with two in the game. She now has 313 in her career. Next on the list is No. 3 Lizzie Colson, who had 324 from 2017-21. The all-time time draw controls record is held by Taylor Cummings, who had 509 from 2013-16. 
  • Sterling holds steady at seventh in career saves with nine in the game. She now has 483. Next up is No. 6 Brittany Dipper, who had 490 from 2009-12. The all-time saves record is held by Alex Kahoe, who had 968 from 1997-2000.
