Rhys Allen and
Tolu Akinduro have been selected to compete for their home countries at their respective U20 continental championships.
Akinduro will compete in the triple jump for Canada at the U20 Pan American Championships in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. In her freshman season with the Terps, Akinduro broke into the record books, with a 12.54m jump at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships putting her at 6th all-time in Maryland history. Akinduro added two top-10 finishes in the 2023 outdoor season, including a win in her first collegiate event at the Navy Invitational in late March.
Allen was another star freshman for the Terps, as he finished in the top 10 of every discus event he competed in during the outdoor season. This includes a five-week stretch where Allen broke his personal best every week, which ended with a 51.86m throw at the Kehoe Twilight meet that won him the event in the Terps' home meet. He will compete for Great Britain in the U20 European Championships in Jerusalem, Israel.
"As a program, we always encourage our athletes to make international teams and have the experience to represent their country," said Maryland Track and Field head coach
Andrew Valmon, "I am proud of Rhys and Tolu for earning these opportunities and for working hard this summer."
