COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland opens the 2023 season on the road as it takes on American at Reeves Field. 

The game will be televised on ESPN+.

In their first season under Coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer, the Terps finished with a record of 4-8-5, including three wins in the Big Ten. Maryland's 3-7-0 record in conference helped lead the team to its highest finish since 2019, after consecutive seasons with no wins in conference. 
 
Series History - American
  • The two team last met in 2011, when the Terrapins coming out on top with a 5-1 win. Sade Ayinde led the Terps with two goals, while Olvia Wagner and Shade Pratt each scored a goal each. Yewande Baolgun, who was on the Nigerian National Team during this year's Women's World Cup, made three saves in goal for the Terps.

Maryland and American last met in 2011, with Maryalnd coming out with a 5-1 win. Sade Ayinde led the Terps with two goals.
Returning key contributors
  • Catherine DeRosa, the team leader in assist in 2022 with four, returns for her senior year in College Park. She is joined by Ava Morales, who is the leading returning goalscorer returns for second season at Maryland. Morales finished the 2022 season strong, scoring a brace in Maryland's 2022 season finale against Purdue.
  • Sofi Vinas returns after being one of the top substitutes for the Terrapins in 2022. Vinas, who transferred from Oregon ahead of 2022, finished the year with a goal and two assists in her first season with the Terps. Sydney Urban is the top returner in defense, with the center back returning after starting in 16 of the 17 games from last season.

  • The Terrapins have revamped the roster ahead of the 2023 season, bringing in eight transfers. Each player has multiple years of Division I experience that should help the squad through the entirety of the season.
  • On defense, the Terps have added four players in Katie Coyle, Caroline Koutsos, Gianna Lucchesi, and Eden White. Coyle comes from Notre Dame where she played in 37 games and was one of the top subs for the Fighting Irish during their run to the Elite Eight in 2022. Koutsos makes the short trip from UMBC, where the senior started in 56 games. Lucchesi was a multi-year starter at Richmond and brings a high-level of experience to the Terrapins back line. Eden White comes from Santa Clara, who started in 60 games for the Broncos and was a member of their 2020 National Championship Team.
  • In midfield the Terps welcome two ACC transfers in Lauren Wrigley and Maggie Fralin. Wrigley comes from North Carolina, where the junior played in 32 games in her two years in Chapel Hill and was a member of their National Runner-Up team in 2022. Fralin comes to College Park from Virginia where the junior was a member of the team that made it to the quarterfinals in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
  • Kat Parris is a forward from Radford who should be key to the team's offensive production. Parris, a two-time First Team All-Big South Selection at Radford and was named Big South Freshman of the Year in 2021. Parris scored 21 goals and picked up 13 assists in 39 games for the Highlanders..
  • Goalkeeper Liz Beardsley looks to start in front of goal for the Terrapins this season. Beardsley come from Georgia where in 2022 she played in 14 games and tallied a 0.89 GAA and had a .739 save percentage, while only allowing 12 goals all season.

Freshman Looking to Make their mark
  • The Terps signed the No. 11 overall recruiting class in the country and the top-ranked class in the Big Ten, according to TopDrawer Soccer. The Terps bring in 14 freshman to the roster, bringing the total number of newcomers to 22.
  • The class is comprised of two top-60 players in the country (Kennedy Bell & Madison Krakower) and a top-25 goalkeeper in Faith Luckey. Every player in the class has a long list of accolades with their respective high school and club teams, including High School All-Americans, High School Players of the Year, National Championships, State Championships, and ECNL Players of the Year.
  • Multiple players have represented their respective national teams at both the youth and senior level. Madison Krakower was called into the Puerto Rican National Team Camp in January of 2023, with Krakower also having experience with the U-17 and U-20 teams. Mia Mitchell competed with the Jamaican U-20 National Team at the 2022 CONCACAF Women's  Championship. Kennedy Bell participated with the United States Youth National Team Training Camp in 2019.

  • Maryland alumni Keri Sarver and Yewande Balogun were both present at this year's FIFA Women's World Cup. Sarver is an assistant coach for New Zealand, one of the host nations of the tournament. Balogun represented her country of Nigeria as a reserve goalkeeper. 
  • Sarver was a two-time All-ACC Selection and a 1998 All-American. Sarver helped lead the Terrapins to four NCAA Tournament appearances from 1995-1998, including quarter final appearances in 1995 and 1996. 
  • Sarver holds the Maryland career records for goals (61), assists (33), points (155). Sarver also holds the single-season records for assists (15, 1996) and points (49, 1998), while also being tied for the single season record in goals (21, 1998). Sarver has scored the most goals in program history in NCAA Tournament play with six, and also scored the most in a single game with three against Fairfield in 1998.
  • Balogun helped lead the Terrapins to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2011. Balogun still holds the record for the lowest goals against average in a career at 0.93. Balogun also ranks in the top ten all-time in goalie games played (67, third), goalie games started (64, third), goalie minutes played (6,063, third), shutouts (19, second), and saves (242, sixth). In her first year with the Terps in 2007, Balogun earned Freshman All-American and All-ACC Freshman honors.
  • Sarver helped lead New Zealand to its first-ever win in the World Cup for the nation on both the women's or men's side with a 1-0 win over Norway. New Zealand finished third in group A with four points.
  • Balogun helped Nigeria make it to the Round of 16 in the tournament. In the group stage, Nigeria finished unbeaten for the first time in the country's history of participating in the world cup. Nigeria kept a clean sheet in three of its four matches, including in the Round of 16 match against England where the Super Falcons went out on penalties.
Accomplishments in first year under nemzer
  • The 2022 season was a year that featured many accomplishments for the program..
  • The Terrapins picked up their first-ever win over Michigan, with a 1-0 win over the Wolverines on September 16. The win was also the first conference win for the Terrapins since October 24, 2019, spanning 22 games.
  • Erksa etched his name into the Maryland record book with his six assists vs. #16 Rutgers on Apr. 29. That broke Bob Boneillo's 46-year record for assists in a single game by a Maryland freshman. Boneillo set the mark of five in the Terps' 19-2 win at Duke on March 27, 1977.
  • Maryland finished the 2022 season with consecutive road victories over Indiana and Purdue. The 1-0 victory over Indiana was the program's first victory over the Hoosiers since 1994. The wins also marked the first time since October of 2019 that the program notched back-to-back Big Ten wins and the first time since joining the Big Ten in 2014 the Terps grabbed two straight road victories.
  • The Terps finished 2022 with three wins in conference. That mark was the most Big Ten wins the program had  since the 2019 season, when they finished with five conference wins.
