Q&A with Summer Bostock

UMTerps.com sat down with Maryland Women's Basketball's Summer Bostock to get to know her on and off the court. Check out her answers below as she gears up for her freshman season.

What made you choose Maryland?
I like Coach Frese. I really like a coach that is going to tell the truth. I appreciate how honest and upfront she is, that was something that really resonated with me. It's always good to have a coach that believes in you and wants to push you.

Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, or only child?
The youngest – I have two older brothers.

When did you start playing basketball, and what was your inspiration for starting?
When I was ten. I don't think I really had an inspiration. I feel like I played every kind of sport. There was like football, soccer and taekwondo. But it was once I started playing basketball, I decided that is what I loved the most, so it stuck with me.

What do you think your biggest strength is as an incoming freshmen, what aspect are you hoping to improve on the most in your college career?
My biggest strength would be playmaking or scoring - shooting specifically. I plan to work on being more vocal and becoming a leader.

What type of music do you listen to before the game? Could you give us a suggestion?
I like R&B. "Before You Walk Out of My Life" or something by Tupac is always good. I like more old school music.

What is your favorite or most memorable moment from your high school career?
My first game of my senior season. I had 40 points and 13 rebounds. It was cool to come back home. I went to the States for my last season so it was good to go back to Canada and have a good start to my last season.

How do you anticipate building chemistry and camaraderie within the team?
It's been good - sometimes I am not the most social, but I am really happy. It makes me smile seeing how genuine and down to earth everyone is. It's really good for building good team camaraderie.

Are there any professional players that you look up to or try to emulate in your playing style?
I like Kobe Bryant and Diana Taurasi. I love Kobe's mentality; he is someone that is fun to watch. When I first started playing basketball, a ref told me I played like DT. I didn't know who she was, so I looked her up and started mimicking her style after that.

Outside of basketball, what are your hobbies and interests?
I like listening to music, sometimes I play video games (I just got back into that) or watch a show. Music is my go-to.

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions that you follow? Any unusual ones?
I like my things neat and in a certain place. My clothes are folded. My shoes and everything are where they should be in my mind.

Do you have any funny or interesting nicknames that your previous teammates or friends have given you?
Simba - that is probably the only one besides Sum, which is pretty basic.

If you had to choose one basketball player, past or present, to be your teammate in a 2-on-2 tournament, who would it be and why?
Kobe, obviously.  I want someone that is going to push me as a teammate. I guess I'll just get his rebounds for a little bit. Hopefully he'll give me the ball and we'll win.

If you were to organize a team bonding activity or event, what would it be?
Go to a concert.

Are there any unusual or unique skills or talents you have off the basketball court that people might not know about?
I can draw a little bit but I don't do it that much anymore. I can juggle but that's nothing special.
