No. 14 Terps Top No. 10 UNC Greensboro, 2-0

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 14 Terps got two big second half goals from Joe Suchecki and Kimani Stewart-Baynes to come out on top in a top-15 battle with 10th-ranked UNC Greensboro on Sunday evening.

The Terps (1-1-0) controlled most of the action in the first half but could not find their first goal of the young season until Suchecki struck on a well-placed ball off his left foot in the 65th minute. Freshman Stewart-Baynes followed that up 12 minutes later, giving Maryland a comfortable advantage over the Spartans (0-1-1) for the remainder of the night.

Mikah Seger made his first career start at keeper and came up with seven saves and the shutout. Stewart-Baynes also logged an assist in the game as did Stefan Copetti and Colin Griffith.

The Terps face the second of four consecutive ranked opponents on Friday when they host No. 18 Wake Forest at 7:30 pm.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps had their first big chance of the evening in the 37th minute as a strong cross from Costabile found the head of Van Heukelum, leaving Copetti one-on-one with the UNC Greensboro keeper who came up with the stop.
  • 10 minutes later, the Terps created another big chance as a beautiful ball from Abe resulted in two chances for Van Heukelum, first a header that goalkeeper Mathias Balle stopped and then a second chance that the Spartans cleared off the line.
  • The teams headed into halftime deadlocked at 0-0 but the Terps held a 6-4 advantage in shots and controlled a majority of the possession.
  • Seger came up with perhaps his biggest save of the night in denying the Spartans' Basile Marc in the 59th minute.
  • Maryland found its first goal of the season with exactly 35 minutes to go in the march as Stewart-Baynes made a nice pass to Suchecki who put a perfectly placed strike into the back of the net from just outside the box.
  • The Terps put the game away in the 77th minute as Copetti lifted a beautiful cross that Griffith got a head on, forcing the Spartan keeper to slap the ball away right into Stewart-Baynes who made a nifty move for the finish.

Numbers To Know
  • 1: Freshman Kimani Stewart-Baynes scored the first goal of his career.

Sasho Statement
  • "I'm delighted by this performance. We challenged our guys to respond after Thursday and they did. We started on the front foot and kept the pressure up the entire game. We deserved the result tonight and it was a positive step for this team, and especially our younger players who are starting to learn how to compete and win at this level."

Up Next
