COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland field hockey's junior forward,
Hope Rose, is this week's Solomon Eye Physicians and Surgeons Terp of the Week. Rose earned six points from three goals, including one game-winner in the first two games of the season.
Rose and the Terps began their 2023 campaign with a west coast tour. They opened against Stanford, collecting a 4-0 shutout. Rose posted the final goal of the afternoon with a rocket from the top of the key on a penalty corner. The Terrapins are now 45-3-2 all-time in season openers and have won the last 26 straight openers.
Maryland faced their second opponent in Cal on Sunday, August 27. This game started differently, as the Golden Bears notched the first goal of the match. The Terps quickly found the equalizer, but the teams held a 1-1 draw through the third quarter. The Terps were awarded their sixth penalty corner of the game and Rose drove in the go-ahead goal. Within 1:04 seconds, she stole the ball near the 25 yard line and with three defenders in front of her, extended the lead to two with a precision shot from the corner of the circle. The Terps collected their second win of the season with a 4-1 victory in Berkeley. They remain undefeated against Cal with a 13-0-0 all-time advantage.
Rose was named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List for the third straight year and is no stranger to conference recognitions. She earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2021. She is a two-time All Big Ten Second Team player and was named to both the Big Ten All-Tournament Team and NCAA All-Tournament Team last season.
The Terps wrap up their California road trip with a Monday matinee against UC Davis at 6 pm ET.
