Mackova Leads Terrapins at Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, SC -- Senior Patricie Mackova shot a 68 in the final round at the Cougar Classic Tuesday at Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Charleston, S.C. Mackova finished tied for 15th in the individual standings and helped Maryland finish eight of 17 teams competing.

Mackova made 14 birdies in the three-round event. She shot an even 71 in the first round Monday, then a 69 in the second. She finished with a score of 208, which was -5.

As a team, the Terrapins finished with a score of 846 (283-281-282), which was six strokes under. They beat Big Ten opponents Michigan State, Illinois, Wisconsin and Penn State, as well as Tennessee, NC State and tournament-host College of Charleston.

"I am happy with the team's performance this week," head coach Kelly Hovland said. "This was one of the strongest fields in college golf and we met the challenge, while also going 4-0 against Big Ten schools. They adapted to a difficult golf course and extreme weather conditions to keep making birdies until the very last hole. It's a quick turnaround to our next event and I can't wait to build on this momentum at Michigan State."

Sophomore Nicha Kanpai tied for 30th in the individual standings with her score of 211 (71-68-72), which was two strokes under total. Her 68 in Monday's second round set a new career low for her as a Terp.

In her first event as a Terrapin, graduate student Virginia Bossi tied with teammate Panassaya Somchit with a score of 215. Bossi shot 72-72-71 and Somchit shot 69-75-71. They tied for 50th.

Senior Maria Vittoria Corbi finished with a score of 219 (74-72-73) in the event.

Next, the Terrapins will compete in the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. Sept. 17 and 18.
