Katey Hendershott Named Assistant Coach of Maryland Softball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach Lauren Karn announced Katey Hendershott as a Maryland softball assistant coach on Tuesday. Hendershott joins the Maryland staff after two years with Karn as an assistant coach at Oakland University.

"I am very honored and excited to be an assistant softball coach at the University of Maryland," said Hendershott. "I am so thankful to Coach Lauren for giving me this opportunity and for her confidence in my abilities to help move this program forward. I look forward to this opportunity to serve in this role and continue to empower young women through the sport of softball."

Hendershott, a native of Ortonville, Michigan, oversaw the defense for Oakland softball. She helped Karn lead the Golden Grizzlies to back-to-back Horizon League regular season titles. Oakland softball won the conference tournament and made an appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2022.

"Katey is going to be a great addition to our coaching staff at the University of Maryland," said Karn.  "She has familiarity competing in the Big Ten as a student-athlete and focuses on serving her student-athletes to develop them in all areas of life.  The attention to detail, the way she studies our sport and her competitiveness are going to be excellent attributes in continuing the success of Maryland Softball.  I'm looking forward to her making an immediate impact on our defensive development and mindset."

Before Oakland, Hendershott worked as a graduate assistant at Purdue Fort Wayne. Her primary responsibilities included coordinating the defense and assisting with hitting. Off the field, Hendershott scouted opponents and coordinated practice plans accordingly.

As a player, Hendershott was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection at Michigan State before graduating in 2020. She arrived in East Lansing for her sophomore season and remained there for the entirety of her collegiate career. Hendershott appeared in 41 games for the Spartans, starting 12.

She began her freshman year of college in 2015 as a dual-sport athlete at Lake Superior State University. Hendershott played both varsity softball and basketball for the Lakers.
