CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Goals came early and often Monday's match between former ACC rivals No. 20 Maryland (1-2-1) and Virginia (3-1), but the Terps could not prevail on the road, falling to the Cavaliers 2-1 at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, VA.

The teams combined for three goals in the opening 20 minutes, as the hosts got on the board on a penalty kick and a goal in transition to bookend a beautiful header from
Stefan Copetti. All three tallies came within five minutes of each other, though the Terps found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 score line.
Maryland had several chances to equal the score in the second half, but despite six corner kicks in the second half, the Terps could not earn a draw.Â

- Virginia fired the opening salvo in the match, as Leo Alfonso converted from the spot to give the Hoos a 1-0 edge at the 12:58 mark.

- Less than four minutes later, the Cavaliers retook a 2-1 lead on a shot from Mouhameth Thiam in transition at the 17:34 mark.
- With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Stewart-Baynes nearly evened the match with a shot just beyond the 18-yard box, but the attempt sailed wide right.
- Mikah Seger dove to his right to stop a point-blank shot, preventing Virginia from extending its advantage.
- Maryland had scoring chances in the 52nd and 53rd minute, but the Terps couldn't take advantage with a shot off Stewart-Baynes' right foot hitting the post and a scramble in front of the net not resulting in a goal.
- Luke van Heukelum had a chance to knot the score on a penalty shot in the 59th minute, but Virginia keeper Holden Brown stopped the attempt.
