Michigan Rallies For Overtime Win Over Maryland, 79-77

Box Score ANN ARBOR, MI – After Maryland led for most of regulation, Michigan forced overtime with a second half surge and beat the Terrapins, 79-77, at Crisler Center on Wednesday night. 

Maryland finished the game and played all of overtime without starters Shyanne Sellers and Brinae Alexander, who both fouled out. Bri McDaniel was ejected late in the third quarter, along with Michigan's Lauren Hansen, after a play for a loose ball.

Maryland sent Laila Phelia to the free-throw line with 0.6 seconds left in the game. She knocked down both free throws to put Michigan up by two, but the Terps had a chance to force double overtime. The Terps went to the hot hand in Jakia Brown-Turner, but her shot off a lob pass rolled off the rim as time expired. Brown-Turner finished with a Maryland-high 21 points. 


  Brown-Turner converted 9-of-15 from the floor, including making her first six shots of the game before a miss. Brown-Turner is averaging 18.8 points over her last four games, shooting 34-for-58 from the floor over the quartet of games. She added six rebounds and a season-best seven assists in the win. 

For Maryland (12-7, 4-4 Big Ten), in addition to Brown-Turner, three Terps scored in double-figures as Allie Kubek tallied 14 points, Lavender Briggs added 14 and Shyanne Sellers netted 11 points. 
  Michigan (14-6, 5-3 Big Ten) was led by Chyra Evans, who scored 17 points and eight rebounds. Five Wolverines scored in double-figures. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • Jakia Brown-Turner and Bri McDaniel helped Maryland get off to an 8-0 run to begin the game. Brown-Turner started off a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and led all scorers with 11 points at the end of the first quarter. Maryland was shooting 10-of-16 (63 percent) as a team during the quarter.
  • The Terps forced six turnovers in under six minutes and the Terps amassed a double-digit lead after Brinae Alexander knocked down a three-pointer at the 3:52 mark of the second quarter to put the Terps up, 39-24. The Terrapins led 46-31 at halftime as Turner scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first 20 minutes. The Terps shot 63.3 percent in the first half, 19-fo-30 shots including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. 
  • A physical third quarter saw Michigan get back within five points at 49-44, but Allie Kubek's three-pointer regained a 52-44 lead with 3:36 left in the third.  The Terps held a 58-50 lead at the end of the third. 
  • Michigan scored the first two buckets of the fourth quarter to get back within four points at 58-54, forcing Maryland to call timeout with 8:42 left in the game. A pair of Briggs' layups pushed the Terps' lead back to nine at 63-54 at 6:26.
  • Maryland held on the rest of the way despite enduring a brief scoring drought. Kubek connected on two clutch free-throws and Sellers made a layup under three minutes to maintain the advantage. 
  • Michigan got within one at 67-66 as Hobbs hit a triple with 1:59 left in the fourth. Maryland then got a stop on the final possession in regulation to force overtime.
  • With the game tied at 72 points in overtime, Faith Masonius recorded a clutch steal to give Maryland a chance at the go-ahead bucket. The defensive play led to a clutch go-ahead three-pointer by Lavender Briggs, but Jordan Hobbs responded with a three-pointer of her own. 
  • The Terps fouled with less than a second on the clock in a tied game and Laila Phelia knocked down both free-throws. The Terps had a chance at a last-second shot to force double overtime but couldn't connect. 
Frese's Take
"
I thought Michigan just played with much more poise and with a lot more composure throughout the second half and into overtime," head coach Brenda Frese said. "Pleased, I thought we still battled and with a lot of adversity we executed late, but it's disappointing to give up a 15-point lead when you're on the road and to come out with a loss."

"Definitely frustrating. Honestly just looking forward to the next game," Briggs said about the loss. "We let that slip through our fingers. Right now it's kind of make it or break it and right now we're at the breaking point. We're just trying to stay together as a team so we can get over that hump."  

Double-Figure Factors
  • Brown-Turner hit the double-figures mark for the 11th time this season, her first with the Terps, scoring 21 points. Overall, she has 78 double-figure scoring games in her career with 67 coming at NC State. 
  • ​​Kubek scored in double-figures for the ninth time this season with 14 points. She scored 10-plus points in 42 career games with 33 coming at Towson before transferring to Maryland. 
  • Briggs scored 14 points and had her seventh game this season in double-figures. She now has 68 games of double-figures in her career. 
  • Sellers (11 points) has scored double-figures in 15 of 19 games this season and 55 in her career.
Records & Milestones 
  • Brinae Alexander has made 113 three-pointers in her two years as a Terrapin, which ranks No. 16 in Maryland's program history. Next on the list is Lexie Brown who made 120 from 2014-15 
  • Maryland has four 1,000-point scorers on its roster. (Brown-Turner - 1,483; Briggs - 1,343 Alexander - 1,325; Sellers - 1,037).
  • Entering the matchup, Bri McDaniel's career three-point percentage was 47.3%, which is currently No. 2 in the Maryland record books. Alexander's Maryland career three-point percentage was 42.7%, which is No. 4 in Maryland history, and Briggs' three-point percentage in her Maryland career was 39.4%, which is tied with Kim Bretz at No. 9.
Brown-Turner Continues Hot Streak
  • Brown-Turner scored 21 points in the contest, marking her fourth game in a row scoring over 15 points. She's now averaging 18.8 points over that stretch. She also added six rebounds and a season-high seven assists.
  • She is also averaging 8.0 rebounds over her last four games and recorded a double-double over that stretch.  
  • She set a Maryland career-high against Purdue (18) at home and broke that mark six days later against Illinois (20).
