COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 6 Maryland is set for a big weekend, traveling to Princeton, New Jersey, to take on the No.13 Princeton Tigers on Friday at 4 p.m. They will then return home to College Park for Senior Day on Sunday, facing Richmond at 1 p.m.
 
matchup Preview
  • No. 6 Maryland is coming off a 1-1 weekend in College Park.  The Terps narrowly lost to No. 3 Ohio State 2-1 on Friday but bounced back with a 2-0 win over No. 7 Michigan on Sunday.  
  • The Terps' offense has been fueled by seniors Hope Rose and team captain Kylee Niswonger. Rose leads the team with 15 points and seven goals this season, scoring four times in the last six games. Niswonger has contributed four goals in 13 games, including her first career hat trick against Lock Haven.  
  • On the defensive side, preseason Big Ten Player to Watch Josie Hollamon has played a key role, adding five goals this season and tying for the team lead with four assists.  
  • In goal, sophomore Alyssa Klebasko has been dominant, ranking third in the Big Ten and fifth nationally in goals-against-average (0.80). She also ranks third in the conference with four shutouts this season.  
  • No. 13 Princeton, starting the season 9-4, will host Maryland after a trilling 2-1 overtime victory against Harvard. Ella Cashman led the Tigers with a fourth-quarter equalizer and the overtime winner. The Princeton squad boasts 15 returning players, seven freshmen, and one player from the 2022 team.
  • Beth Yeager, a member of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team, powers Princeton's offense.  She leads the Ivy League in goals (9), assists (9), and points.  
  • The Princeton defense has started the same three defenders all season in Clem Houlden, Gracie McGowan and Ottilie Sykes, while Robyn Thompson ranks third in the conference in both goals-against-average and save percentage. Thompson also sits sixth all-time at Princeton in career wins (34) and seventh in career shutouts (12). 
  • Richmond, with a 10-5 record, heads to College Park led by Clara Larripa, who has 12 goals and eight assists this season. Larripa, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, is building on an impressive freshman campaign at La Salle.
  • In goal, Kristen Rake ranks second in saves per game and third in save percentage in the Atlantic 10. Richmond's Valen Luna Paratore has also made waves, earning her fourth Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor. 
  • Maryland is 26-11-1 all-time against Princeton. The Terps lost to the Tigers 3-2 last season.
  • Maryland is 19-0-1 all-time against Richmond.  The Terps defeated Richmond 5-1 in 2019.

  • On Friday, Maryland field hockey lost in a tightly contested defensive battle, 2-1, to No. 3 Ohio State. The Buckeyes' Makenna Webster scored the game-winner on a penalty corner with 29 seconds remaining. With limited time, the Terps could not get a shot off to tie the game and send it to overtime. 
  • Ohio State broke the stalemate with a goal by Katie Fichtner at the 9:20 mark. The Terps promptly responded with a goal by freshman Ella Gaitan approximately a minute later. Gaitan's goal was her sixth of the season.
  • Despite the loss, Maryland's defense, led by Ericka Morris-Adams, Josie Hollamon and Rayne Wright, limited the Buckeyes to six shots and five penalty corners. The Terps led both categories, 15-6 and 10-5, respectively.
  • On Sunday, No. 8 Maryland took down No. 7 Michigan, 2-0, on Sunday at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Wolverines entered the contest on an 11-game win streak. 
  • The Terps earned their fifth ranked win and third over a top-10 team this season. 
  • Hope Rose scored the game's first goal in the second quarter on a penalty corner. It was the team-leading seventh of the year and assisted by Emma DeBerdine and Kylee Niswonger. Michigan had given up just two goals on penalty corners entering the matchup. It was also the Wolverines' first goal given up in conference play this season. Josie Hollamon tacked on a dagger with under three minutes to play, scoring her fifth goal of the season. 
  • Maryland's back line of Ericka Morris-AdamsRayne Wright and Hollamon limited Michigan's Abby Tamer to a blank stat sheet on only four shots. Tamer played alongside DeBerdine on the United States women's national field hockey team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
  • Goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko made three saves and was credited with her fifth shutout of the season, matching her total from a year ago. It marked the first time Michigan was shut out in a game this season.

A balanced attack
  • This season, the Terps have showcased a diverse offensive arsenal, with 12 different players finding the back of the net.
  • Maryland is tied with No. 3 Ohio State and No. 7 Michigan for the most unique goal scorers in the conference.
  • Last season, Maryland ended the season with 10 different goal scorers.
  • Leading the charge this season is a mix of veteran players and newcomers.  
  • The Terps' offense has been powered by seniors Hope Rose and team captain Kylee Niswonger. Rose leads the team with 15 points and seven goals this season. Niswonger has netted four goals in 13 games.
  • Transfers Alina Gerke and Fleur Knopert have made an immediate impact to the team. Knopert is fourth on the team in points with nine on four goals and an assist. Gerke earned her first assist against No. 13 Rutgers and scored her first goal as a Terp against Lock Haven.  
  • Freshmen Ellie Goldstein, Annemijn Klijnhout, and Ella Gaitan have also added youthful energy to an already potent attack. All three freshmen have recorded one goal each. Klijnhout recorded her first career goal against No. 10 Iowa.

  • Sophomore Alyssa Klebasko is continuing her dominance in the cage coming off of a stellar freshman year.
  • The 2023 Big Ten All-Second Team goalie is currently ranking third in the Big Ten and fifth in the country in goals-against-average (0.82). She also ranks third in the conference in save percentage this season.  
  • Through 13 games, Klebasko has 35 saves and four shutouts.

  • This year, Maryland will be celebrating 50 years of the historic field hockey program. 
  • Under Hall of Fame coaches Sue Tyler and Missy Meharg, the Terps have epitomized the word dominance in field hockey.
  • With eight NCAA titles, Maryland is third most among all Division 1 schools.
  • The Terps have reached the Final Four a historic 21 times and have an all-time winning percentage above 75 percent.
