Volleyball Prepares For West Coast Battle With No. 11 Oregon, Washington

COLLEGE PARK, MD --  Maryland volleyball travels to the west coast to face off against new conference opponents, No. 11 Oregon and Washington. The Terps open the weekend against their fourth-straight ranked opponent in No. 11 Oregon on Friday, October 25 at 9 p.m. ET, in Eugene. Maryland will then travel to Seattle to face Washington on Saturday, October 26 at 10 p.m. ET. 

Both matches will be broadcast on B1G+.

  • Maryland owns a 10-9 season record and sits 1-7 in the Big Ten after dropping a set of tough contests against No. 16 USC and Illinois last weekend.
  • The Terps have been a dominant force from the service line throughout the season and in conference play. Maryland averages 2.14 service aces per set, leading the Big Ten. It is the only team in the conference to average over two aces per set.
  • Maryland picked up an impressive 14 aces against the Fighting Illini on Sunday.
  • In addition to conference standings, the Terps rank eighth in the nation in serving. Samantha Schnitta leads Maryland with .83 aces per set, leading the NCAA for the fourth consecutive week.

  • Schnitta leads the team in kills, averaging 3.33 per set. The graduate student has recorded 14 matches with ten or more kills. Behind her sits Sam Csire, averaging 2.82 kills per set.
  • Zoe Huang and Sydney Dowler split time on the court against the Trojans and the Fighting Illini. In conference play, Dowler leads Maryland with 7.00 assists per set while Huang totals 55 assists.
  • Fifth year libero, Lilly Gunter ranks twelfth in the Big Ten averaging 3.34 digs per set. She has recorded double-digit digs in 13 matches at the midway point of the season. Defensive specialist Jonna Spohn has taken on a bigger role in Big Ten play and earned a few starts in recent matches. She has recorded 33 digs across eight conference matches, including a season-high nine against Iowa. 
  • Eva Rohrbach leads the Terps in blocks with 67. The sophomore averages over three blocks per match against conference opponents.

  • This weekend marks the first matchups between both Oregon and Washington in Maryland volleyball's history.
  • Oregon and Washington joined the Big Ten earlier this year, along with USC and UCLA.

  • No. 11 Oregon sits 14-3 overall and sits at 6-2 in the conference. Last weekend, the Ducks had a 1-1 split after dropping a match against then-No. 9 Wisconsin followed by a win over Iowa.
  • The Ducks are one of the strongest blocking teams in the nation, sitting sixth overall with a nearly three blocks per set average. Onye Ofoegbu leads Oregon with a 1.23 blocks per set rate.
  • Offensively, the Ducks post a 13.07 kills per set average led by Mimi Colyer. Coyler ranks ninth in the conference with 230 kills. Cristin Cline sits fifth in the Big Ten in assists per set with 10.47. 
  • Washington owns a 14-4 overall record, as well as a 4-4 conference record. It picked up wins against Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan State.
  • The Huskies are a well-rounded unit ranking in the top-eight of the conference in kills, assists, blocks and digs.
  • A few notable names for Washington include Madi Endsley and Molly Wilson for their offensive production. Endsley leads the Huskies in kills with 180 and Wilson in assists with 397.
  • Libero Lauren Bays and middle blocker Julia Hunt lead on the defensive side. Hunt ranks sixth in the conference in blocks per set, averaging 1.31.
  • Washington will face Rutgers on Friday before facing off against the Terps on Saturday.
