COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 6 Maryland is back in action on Friday with a showdown against Michigan State in East Lansing, Michigan, at 3 p.m. Following that, the Terps will return to College Park to host American on Monday, October 14th, at 6 p.m.

  • The Terps' offense has been powered by seniors Hope Rose and team captain Kylee Niswonger. Niswonger has netted four goals in nine games, including her first career hat trick against Lock Haven.
  • Hope Rose is coming off a strong weekend, scoring three goals across two road games against Indiana and No. 10 Iowa.  She leads the team this season with 11 points and five goals.  
  • Preseason Big Ten Player to Watch, Josie Hollamon, has been a key figure in Maryland's defense while also contributing offensively with three goals this season. 
  • In goal, sophomore Alyssa Klebasko has been dominant for the Terps, ranking second in the Big Ten and fifth in the country in goals-against-average (0.72). She also ranks third in the conference with four shutouts this season.  
  • Michigan State will host the Terps in East Lansing after starting the season 6-5. The Spartans are coming off a penalty shootout loss to Kent State this past weekend. 
  • The 2024 Spartans return two of their top four leader scoring from last season, Ellie Rutherford and Emma O'Neill, while also welcoming eight new freshman from three different countries. Offensively, the team is led by Rutherford, who has 14 points, including four goals this season.  O'Neill follows with 11 points but leads the team in assists with five, ranking seventh in the conference in assist per game.  
  • This season, Michigan State ranks fifth in the Big Ten in assist per game and fourth in penalty corners per game  
  • Goalkeeper Lyra Gavino is eighth in the conference in save percentage, seventh in goals-against average, and third in saves per game.  
  • American will head to College Park after starting the season 6-5.  Offensively, the Eagles are lead by Jordan Reicher, who has 14 points, including six goals this season. Goalkeeper Bryn Underwood leads the conference in goals-against average and save percentage.  
  • Maryland is 16-0 all-time against Michigan State. The Terps defeated the Spartans 3-0 last season.
  • Maryland is 45-1-0 all-time against American.  The Terps defeated American 2-1 last season on the road.

  • No. 6 Maryland coming off a successful 2-0 weekend on the road, with victories over Indiana and No. 10 Iowa.
  • On Friday, Maryland field hockey made history by becoming just the second college program to reach 800 wins, defeating Indiana 3-0 at Deborah Tobias Field. The only other program to achieve this milestone is North Carolina, which holds a record of 835-217-19.
  • Hope Rose opened the scoring for the Terps in the first quarter and added her second goal in the 36th minute.  This brought her season total to four goals. Rose's second goal marked the 41st of her career, and it was her second multi-goal game against Indiana, having done the same in 2021.  Overall, she has eight multi-goal games in her career.
  • On Sunday, Maryland handed No. 10 Iowa their first home loss of the season with a dominant 5-0 victory.  This marked the Terps' fourth ranked win and their second over a top-10 team in 2024. 
  • The win also represented Maryland's largest margin of victory over Iowa in their 28 all-time matchups.  Freshman Ella Gaitan contributed her second and third career goals, while fellow freshman Annemijn Klijnhout scored her first career goal in the win.
  • Goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko played a key role, making six saves over the two games and helping secure two shutouts on the road.

  • This season, the Terps have showcased a diverse offensive arsenal, with 12 different players finding the back of the net.
  • Maryland is tied with No. 5 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan for the most unique goal scorers in the conference.
  • Last season, Maryland ended the season with 10 different goal scorers.
  • Leading the charge this season is a mix of veteran players and newcomers.

  • Transfers Alina Gerke and Fleur Knopert have made an immediate impact to the team. Knopert is fifth on the team in points with five on two goals and an assist. Gerke earned her first assist against No. 13 Rutgers and scored her first goal as a Terp against Lock Haven.  
  • Freshman Ellie Goldstein, Annemijn Klijnhout, and Ella Gaitan have also added youthful energy to an already potent attack. All three freshmen have recorded one goal each. Klijnhout recorded her first career goal this past weekend against No. 10 Iowa.

  • Sophomore Alyssa Klebasko is continuing her dominance in the cage coming off of a stellar freshman year.
  • The 2023 Big Ten All-Second Team goalie is currently ranking second in the Big Ten and fifth in the country in goals-against-average (0.72). She also ranks third in the conference with four shutouts this season.  
  • Through ten games, Klebasko has 24 saves and four shutouts.

b1g performances, b1g awards
  • Freshman Ella Gaitan was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in an announcement by the conference on Monday.
  • On Sunday, Gaitan recorded her first multi-goal game in Maryland's 5-0 victory over No. 10 Iowa.  She scored her second and third career goals, both from Maryland penalty corners.
  • This marks the second time this season that Gaitan has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
  • Gaitan was also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in week 2 for her performance against Boston College.
  • Against No. 17 Boston College, Ella Gaitan scored her first career goal just under two minutes into the game.  Gaitan has played a key role that has helped Maryland start the season 3-0 for three consecutive years, dating back to 2022.
  • Before arriving to Maryland, Gaitan was recognized as one of the national's top prospects, being named a 2022 Max Field Hockey Top 50 Player for the 2024 Class.  Her standout high school career earned her several honors in 2021, including MAX Field Hockey Second Team All-New Jersey Region, First Team MAPL, and NJISA Prep "A" All-State First Team.
