Frese Signs Two in Class of 2025

 COLLEGE PARK, MD --  The Maryland women's basketball team will welcome two top 100 freshmen in the country next season, head coach Brenda Frese announced Wednesday.
 
Frese and her staff signed two top recruits that make up the Terrapins' class of 2025. Addi Mack (Minneapolis, Minn / Minnehaha Academy) and Rainey Welson (Greenville, Wisc. / Hortonville High School) both signed to play for the Terrapins.

Both Mack and Welson are four-star recruits. Mack is the No. 2 player in the state of Minnesota according to PrepGirlsHoops and Jr. All-Star Girls Basketball. She is No. 55 in the Jr. All-Star National Top 100 and in the BTN Scouting National Top 10. Welson is the No. 1 player in the state of Wisconsin according to PrepGirlsHoops and ranked No. 34 nationally by ESPN. 

"I am grateful to our staff for their hard work in signing these 2 elite guards who will fit in perfectly to our program," Frese said. "Our staff was very intentional in finding the right fit and families and these players embody our core values and culture within our program. They are winners with high character."
 
Frese has signed 16 top 10 recruiting classes in her 23 years at Maryland. Frese brought in the top recruiting class in 2016 and 2019 and she signed the nation's No. 2 recruiting class in 2007, 2010 and 2018.

Frese on Mack: "We have recruited Addi and her family hard for the past two years. Addi is a proven winner who wants to play at the highest level. She is the ultimate true point guard that will excel in our transition game with her elite level speed and pace.  She also is a proven three-level scorer having scored over 3,600 points in her high school career.  She has a very high IQ and very strong skill set. Addi will do whatever it takes to win. Addi will have an immediate impact on our team and program."
 
Mack on Maryland: "I chose Maryland because of its competitiveness and rich women's basketball history, combined with a great academic institution. I felt like Maryland would help me reach my ultimate goals in all aspects of life, both in basketball and the business world. Maryland has very high standards and a track record of sustained success, which is compelling to me. I can't wait to come to College Park next year!"

RAINEY WELSON

  • Helped lead team to two conference championships (2021-22, 2023-24)
  • Averaged 23.3 points, 3.5 points, 2.1 steals and 4.1 rebounds per game as a junior
  • Two-time First Team All State as a sophomore and junior and honorable mention honoree as freshman
  • Three-time First Team All Conference and a two-time All-Defensive honoree
  • Currently Hortonville's all-time leading scorer
  • Scored 653 points as a junior in 2023-24 and scored 43 in one game
  • Shot 89% from the foul line at Hortonville
  • Made 137 free throws in 2023-24 and 216 field goals
  • Played AAU for North Tartan
  • Team won 2021 15u State Championship, 2022 16u State Championship and back-to-back 17u State Championships in 2023 and 2024
  • In 2022, team took 2nd at 16u Nationals in EYBL
 
Frese on Welson: "We are thrilled to welcome Rainey and her family to our program.  Rainey is someone who has been loyal and committed to us early in the process.  Rainey is a tough, fierce competitor who will provide an immediate impact.  She is a versatile combo guard that can play multiple positions. Rainey is a scorer that is also a knock down 3-point shooter.  She is also a strong guard that can get to the rim anytime as well as has a very high IQ within the game. Our fans will love her style of play."
  
Welson on Maryland: "I decided to come to Maryland for the fantastic people and atmosphere as well as getting a great education. Plus, it helps that the Big Ten is such a competitive conference and so many games are televised so my family is able to watch back home."

It will only be a matter of time before Rainey will make an impact for the Terrapins.
