COLLEGE PARK, MD - After earning MVP honors of the Saatva Empire Classic game against Villanova, Maryland's Derik Queen was announced on Monday as the Big Ten Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week. Queen is the first freshman Terp to earn the weekly accolade since Jalen Smith did so three times during the 2018-19 season.

Overall last week, Queen helped Maryland go 2-0 with a 108-37 win over Canisius and a 76-75 win over Villanova in the Empire State Classic. He averaged 16.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting 13-of-20 (.650) from the floor.

In the win over Canisius, he had 10 points, six rebounds, and an assist in just 18 minutes of action.

He followed that by earning Empire Classic MVP honors with 22 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and a block in the comeback win over Villanova. With the Terps trailing by 12 at halftime, Queen took over in the second half scoring 18 of his 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting while hitting the game-tying and game-winning free throws with 19 seconds to go. It marked his third 20-point game of the season and his second career double-double.

Additionally, he became the first NCAA Division I freshman center to lead his team in points, rebounds and assists in a game since Chet Holmgren led Gonzaga in all three categories on Feb. 5, 2022. It was also the first time at Maryland that a freshman at any position led the team in all three stats since Melo Trimble on Feb. 19, 2015.

Queen and the Terps will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 27, as Maryland hosts Bucknell at the XFINITY Center. The opening tip is slated for 4:30 PM and the game will be televised on BTN.
