Late Run Keys Terps 66-56 Win To Advance To 7-0

ANNAPOLIS, MD – No. 10 Maryland women's basketball defeated George Mason, 66-56, in the Navy Classic at Alumni Hall on Saturday. The Terps advanced to 7-0, their best unbeaten streak to begin a season since starting 12-0 during the 2018-19 season.  
 
The Terps led 18-8 at the end of the first quarter, generating a 12-0 run along the way. They remained in front until George Mason took its first lead of the game with a 3-pointer with 2:00 to go in the third to take a 43-41. Both teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter, but the Terps pulled away with a layup by Shyanne Sellers at the five-minute mark to enter the media timeout. They subsequently remained in front to close out the game.  

Kaylene Smikle led the Terps in scoring for the sixth straight game, scoring 16 points, including 11 in the second half. She added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sellers had another signature all-around performance to follow, with 15 points, ​​six rebounds and four assists. 

  Saylor Poffenbarger and Mir McLean each provided a spark off the bench as the main contributors to Maryland's 20 bench points. Poffenbarger scored 10 points and collected 12 rebounds for the 14th double-double of her career and her first as a Terp, while McLean netted eight and grabbed five boards.   

George Mason (6-1) was handed its first loss of the season after starting 6-0 for just the second time in program history. Kennedy Harris led the Patriots with 26 points. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps led 11-3 at the first media timeout despite going scoreless for nearly three minutes. They were on a 7-0 run entering the break. Four different Terps scored, including a 3-pointer by Shyanne Sellers.
  • Maryland led 18-8 at the end of the first quarter, led by Saylor Poffenbarger's five points. 
  • George Mason called a timeout as Maryland made four of its last five shots from the floor and led 29-15 at 6:38 in the second. Poffenbarger caught fire, making two 3-pointers and leading the team with eight points. 
  • The Terrapins led 37-27 at halftime, limiting George Mason to just 29% shooting from the floor. Mir McLean came off the bench to provide a spark, scoring eight points and collecting five rebounds.
  • George Mason cut the lead to just three at 41-38 at 4:56 in the third. 
  • The Patriots led 45-44 entering the fourth quarter, led by 19 points from Kennedy Harris. 
  • Both teams went back and forth to begin the fourth, but a layup by Sellers gave the Terps a 53-51 advantage at 4:58 entering the media timeout. 
  • Maryland led by five at 58-53 with 2:34 remaining. They then closed out the game from the free-throw line. 
Double-Figure Factors
  • Kaylene Smikle netted 16 points for her 44th career game in double figures. It was her sixth game netting double-digit points as a Terp, doing so consecutively.
  • Shyanne Sellers scored 15 points, recording her 72nd career game in double figures. She has scored in double-figures in five games this season. 
  • Saylor Poffenbarger tallied 10 points for her 29th career game in double figures. It was her second game scoring double-figures as a Terp. 
Unstoppable Start 
  • Maryland advanced to 7-0 this season. This is Maryland's best unbeaten streak to begin a season since starting 12-0 during the 2018-19 season. 
  • In 2018-19, the Terps finished 29-5 with a trip to the Big Ten Tournament Championship game and NCAA Tournament Second Round. 
  • The Terrapins' best unbeaten streak to begin a season is 18-0 during the 2006-07 season.                         
Sellers On The Charts 
  • Shyanne Sellers moved to 27th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1310. She passed Stephanie Jones, who scored 1,302 points from 2017-20. Next on the list is Stephanie Cross (1,349 from 1995-98). 
  • The point guard is also 11th on the all-time assists list with 437 in her career. She's closing in on Carla Holmes (439 from 1988-91), who sits in 10th place.
