Queen becomes first multiple-time honoree since Jalen Smith in 2018-19.
COLLEGE PARK, MD – After averaging 21.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in the opening week of Big Ten play, Maryland's Derik Queen was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.
Queen had a pair of double-doubles this week while shooting 17-of-28 (.607) from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. He also tallied three steals, two assists, and two blocks.
In the win over Ohio State, Queen posted 17 points and 11 rebounds with two steals.
He followed that up with a career-high 26 points and 12 rebounds with two blocks, one assist, and one steal. He was 11-of-18 (.611) from the field, 2-of-5 (.400) from three, and 2-of-2 at the free throw line.
After posting two 20-point performances, Queen now has five for the year. His 26 points at Purdue were the most by a Terp freshman in a true road game since 1996-97. He also now has four double-doubles in just his first 10 games played.
Queen leads Maryland (8-2, 1-1 B1G) in scoring (17.5 ppg) which also ranks second-best among Maryland freshmen dating back to 1947-48. Joe Smith has the best per-game mark at 19.4 points.
Earlier this season, Queen earned the Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor for the first time after being named the MVP of the Saatva Empire Classic in the win over Villanova. He is the first freshman Terp to earn the weekly accolade multiple times (and overall) since Jalen Smith did so three times during the 2018-19 season.
The Terps have a bye week upcoming and will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 17 against Saint Francis at the XFINITY Center. The game will tip at 7:30 PM on BTN and will also be carried on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Johnny Holliday, Chris Knoche, and Walt Williams calling the action.
