COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland softball team will head to Hammond, Louisiana for the Lions Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.  The Terps will face off against three different opponents over three days of competition.  The action kicks off Feb. 16 when the Terps open the series against Southeast Missouri at 1:00 p.m. ET. and will take on Syracuse later in the day at 3 p.m. ET.     

 
Series history
  • Maryland is coming off a 2-3 start following a weekend trip in Los Angeles, California.
  • Southeastern Louisiana will host the tournament after starting 5-0.  They are outscoring their opponents 31-0.
  • Syracuse will head to Louisiana with a .313 team batting average.  They are lead by Lindsey Hendrix (2-0, 0.00 ERA) in the circle and they are holding teams to a .248 batting average.
  • Maryland is currently 3-2 all-time against Syracuse.  The last time the two teams faced off was in 2014 when the Terps defeated Syracuse 7-6.
  • Southeast Missouri is led by Aubrie Shore (.438) and Kynzie Wrigley (.400) at the plate.  In the circle they have seen five different pitchers see action so far this season.  The Redhawks enter the weekend with a 3.83 earned run average.

Courtney Wyche is currently 7th in career wins with 41 only 15 wins behind moving into second place.
last week's recap
  • Maryland was able to earn their first win this season against San Diego 4-0.  Bri Godfrey, a sophomore who transferred from Marshall, pitched six shutout innings for the Terps.  Godfrey carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished the game only giving one single and two walks.  
  • Against No. 10 UCLA, Maryland jumped out to a 4-0 lead but the Bruins were able to rally for a 6-5 victory.  Michaela Jones went 2-for-3, including the first home run of the season for the Terps.  Jones scored two runs and finished the game with two RBI's.
  • On the final day of the weekend, the Terps were able to bounce back with a 8-1 victory over LMU.  Freshman Delaney Reefe hit her first college home run which was a grand slam to help drive in four RBI's on the day.
  • Graduate Courtney Wyche had a stellar performance in the circle against LMU.  She retired the first 15 batters she faced while tossing a complete game.  Wyche also struck out eight batters and only allowed two hits.

New faces shine 
  • Maryland has 10 new players this year and the new faces made sure to make an impact quickly in their first week as Terps.
  • Sophomore transfer from Marshall, Bri Godfrey currently holds the best ERA on the team with a 0.00 ERA.  In her first start as a Terp she held San Diego without a hit until the sixth inning and earned her first victory as a Terp.  
  • Graduate student Diamond Williams, also made an immediate impact for Maryland.  The transfer student from Coastal Carolina finished her first weekend going 5 for 17 with a .294 batting average.  On Sunday, against LMU she hit her first home run and finished the weekend driving in 4 runs.
  • Graduate student Mazie MacFarlane also made her presence known.  The right fielder from Utah State missed all of last season with an injury but provided an immediate impact with her bat and her glove in Los Angeles.  MacFarlane had three hits and two RBI's during the first five games and made a pair of impressive catches in right field.

moving up the record books
  • Jaeda McFarland is currently fourth all time in career batting average with .331 and currently has the school record for most career triples with 14.  She hit a triple in the game against LMU to help extend her record.     McFarland is also fourth in school history in stolen bases and is only 10 back from moving up into third place.
  • Graduate student Courtney Wyche is currently in seventh place in career strikeouts and only 52 strikeouts back from moving into fifth place.  She is 7th in career wins with 41 only 15 wins behind moving into second place.  Lastly, she has pitched 467 innings in her career only 112 innings from moving into fifth place.

freshman spotlight
  • Freshman catcher Delaney Reefe was quick to introduce herself to the college softball world.  The freshman finished her first weekend series with a .385 batting average after she went 5-13.  Reefe was able to drive in 6 RBI's and her weekend was highlighted by hitting her first home run which was a grand slam.  
  • In her first career game, Reefe went 3-for-4 with two runs scored against San Diego.
  • In her second career game against No. 10 UCLA, Reefe had a two RBI single and would finish her first full day as a Terp going 4-5.
  • In the last game of the series, Reefe was able to help lift Maryland over LMU 8-1 as she would go 1-3 with four RBI's.
