Young Scores 1000th Point As A Terp In 56-53 Loss To Rutgers

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Jahmir Young scored his 1,000th point as a Terp but it wasn't enough as Maryland lost, 56-53, to Rutgers on Tuesday at XFINITY Center. The Terps are now 13-10 overall and 5-7 in conference play.

Young (16 points) became the sixth NCAA player since 2006 to post 1,000 points at two different schools on a putback floater in the paint with 16:50 left in the second half. He reached that milestone in just 57 career games, which is the third fastest in program history. He was also the fifth player overall to do it in two seasons as a Terp.

Young now has scored 1,007 points for Maryland in his two-year career after scoring 1,421 at Charlotte from 2019-22. Young is the second active leading scorer in the nation with 2,428 points in his five-year college career.

Down by nine points with less than three minutes to play, the Terps bridged the gap to within one point but were unable to complete the comeback win. Jeremiah Williams scored a layup to beat the shot clock and the Terps were unable to get a desperation three-pointer to go that would tie the game up as time expired shortly after.

Julian Reese recorded his 11th double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Young also notched a double-double with 12 rebounds, tying his career high. It was the first time two Terps had a double-double in the same game since Feb. 11, 2020 when Jalen Smith and Donta Scott achieved the feat.

Donta Scott was the other Terp to reach a career milestone during the game. He became the all-time leader in Maryland program history for games started in a career. Scott has started 137 games over his five-year career to surpass Steve Blake's record from 1999-2003.

Rutgers (12-10, 4-7 B1G) was paced by Mawot Mag and Jeremiah Williams who each scored in double figures. Clifford Omoruyi fouled out of the contest.

Breaking Down the Action
  • Maryland and Rutgers were tied 8-8 at the first media timeout. The Scarlet Knights then sparked a 9-0 run while the Terps were held scoreless for six minutes, but Maryland keyed a run of its own headlined with a three-pointer by Jahmir Young to take a 16-15 lead.
  • The Terrapins entered the locker room with a 24-22 advantage. The 22 points given up in the first half tied the Terps fewest allowed in a conference game this season.
  • Young became the third fastest Terp to reach 1,000 points in his career on a putback floater to take a 30-28 lead at the 16:50 mark. The bucket was the sixth lead change of the game.
  • Rutgers gained momentum with a 7-0 run to take a seven-point lead. It was the largest lead of the game with the Scarlet Knights leading by the same amount in the first half.
  • The Terps led 52-43 with three minutes to play. The nine-point advantage was the largest up to that point.
Coach Willard's Take
"Coming off the effort we had at Michigan State, we really struggled coming out of the gate to start the game. We didn't have a whole lot of energy from our starting group that has normally been really good for us. They were good defensively, but offensively we just didn't have the same sense of urgency that we had on defense. When you're at home you have got to be able to score the basketball".
