No. 9 Terps Capture Third Top-10 Win Of Season, 11-8 Over No. 2 James Madison

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 9 Maryland women's lacrosse picked up its third top-10 ranked win of the season in an 11-8 thrilling comeback victory over No. 2 James Madison on Sunday at Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Terps' last win over a top-2 team was on April 23, 2022, when they defeated Northwestern, 15-9. The Terps handed James Madison (6-1) its first loss of the season.

Maryland (6-1) faced a 5-2 deficit in the first half before scoring eight of the game's next nine goals to take a commanding 10-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. The go-ahead goal was scored by Eloise Clevenger and the Terps dominated the rest of the way. Clevenger finished with two goals and two assists.  
  Libby May bolstered the Maryland offense with a season-high four goals on five shots. It was her first hat trick of the season and the 30th of her career. May moved into the Top 10 in career goals with the Terrapins as she now has 181. 
  Hannah Leubecker scored twice and Chrissy Thomas created her teammates with four assists for the second game in a row. 
  Goalie Emily Sterling made a season-high 14 saves, many of which occurred at point-blank range, to anchor Maryland's defense. The defense led by Meghan Ball, Brianna Lamoureux and Kennedy Major, provided an overall valiant effort to slow down James Madison. Major had four caused turnovers to lead the team. Lamoureux had a team-best four groundballs. Ball topped the team with five draw controls. The Dukes entered the game averaging 18.8 goals per game and were held to eight and just three in the second half.    
  The Terps won 14 draw controls, proving to be another major catalyst in their win with Ahearn winning four. The Dukes had just nine draw control wins.  

The win was Maryland's first against James Madison since 2019 despite boasting a 43-6 all-time record in games against the university. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • James Madison got on the board early, scoring on its first possession less than a minute into the game, but Kori Edmondson picked up her 12th goal of the season, getting past defenders to tie things at one apiece. The Duke's added three more goals in the quarter and the Terps added one from Eloise Clevenger to enter the second trailing 4-2. 
  • James Madison scored first in the second quarter to take a 5-3. But the Terps scored three unanswered goals from Hannah Lebecker and two from Libby May to enter halftime tied at 5-5. May's tying goal stemmed from a nice check by Clevenger which led to a turnover and breakaway opportunity. Emily Sterling had five saves at the half.  
  • Once again, the Dukes struck first in the third quarter. Maryland responded by scoring three straight goals from Shaylan Ahearn, Clevenger and May to lead 8-6 after three quarters. May picked up her first hat trick of the season.
  • Maryland continued its momentum by scoring two quick goals by Leubecker and Hailey Russo in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. The Dukes only managed two more goals in the last quarter. May scored once again to seal the win. 
Hat Trick Terps  Multi Terps Update
  • Libby May (four goals) recorded the 58th multi-point game of her career. It was her 52nd career game with multiple goals. 
  • Eloise Clevenger (two goals and two assists) had the 40th multi-point game of her career. It was her 22nd game with multiple goals and her 27th with multiple assists.
  • Chrissy Thomas (four assists) had the 15th multi-point game of her career. It was her ninth career game with multiple assists. It was her fifth with three or more assists. 
  • Hannah Leubecker (two goals) notched her 50th career multi-point game and 48th multi-goal game.
  • Hailey Russo (one goal and one assist) recorded the third multi-point and multi-goal game of her career. 
Terps On The Charts 
  • Emily Sterling passed Kim Chorosiewski (1985-88) and moved into fourth place on the career saves list after her 14 in the game. She now has 562 in her career. Third place is Marylynne Morgan (1981-84) with 720 career saves. 
  • Eloise Clevenger is eighth on the all-time assists list after passing Kelly Kasper (2005-08). She had two in the game and has 103 in her career. She's just three away from passing Judy Dougherty (1978-81) and claiming the seventh spot. 
  • Shaylan Ahearn is third in program history with 356 draw control wins. She added to her total with four on Sunday. Next on the list is Kali Hartshorn (2017-20), who had 421 in her career. 
  • Libby May and Hannah Leubecker are No. 10 and 13 respectively on the career goals list. May has 181 and Leubecker has 176.
