Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Mazie MacFarlane hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning, to lead Maryland softball to a 6-5 win over James Madison on Tuesday at Maryland Softball Stadium. It was the Terps' second grand slam of the season.
What started as a tight pitcher's duel ended as a back-and-forth shootout, as both teams belted two or more home runs in the contest. The Terps homered three times off the bats of MacFarlane and Diamond Williams, upping Maryland's total to seven homers across the last three games.
Williams launched her team-leading tenth home run in the fifth inning. It was a solo shot and served as the go-ahead run. Williams has hit a home run in each of her last three games. Maryland (13-14) sealed the win as Julia Shearer pitched the remaining 2.2 innings and received the first win of her career.
MacFarlane went 2-for-3 with her two homers and five RBIs, tying her career-high RBI mark.
Bri Godfrey went 4.1 innings and held the hard-hitting Dukes team to only one run across the first four frames.
James Madison (17-10), ranked No. 38 among Division I schools in RPI, belted two home runs in the game.
Breaking Down The Action
- Madison Runyan laid out to make the third out grab in the first inning.
- Megan Mikami led off the bottom of the frame with a hit-by-pitch, followed by a Jaeda McFarland walk, but Maryland couldn't convert for runs.
- The game remained scoreless until Mazie MacFarlane changed the game in the bottom of the third with a grand slam. Mikami finally broke through James Madison's pitching with a single before she and McFarland both advanced on passed balls. Sydney Lewis was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and set up MacFarlane for the slam over the left-center field wall.
- The Dukes got one run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI double. But with a runner on, Bri Godfrey closed out the inning with a commanding punch out to hold the score at 3-1.
- James Madison put another run through in the fifth with an RBI single and tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run home run. Diamond Williams stretched into a split to secure the inning-ending double play ball.
- Williams followed with a solo blast to deep center in the bottom of the fifth, lifting Maryland back above James Madison, 5-4. The Terps offense refused to yield as the Dukes repeatedly answered Maryland's scoring bouts.
- Julia Shearer came up big with a one-two-three sixth inning to hold the score at 5-4.
- MacFarlane smashed her second home run of the night to up Maryland's lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth.
