Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

LaPointe & Edmondson Net Hat Tricks As No. 4 Terps Beat No. 8 Hopkins, 13-8

BALTIMORE – No. 4 Maryland women's lacrosse secured a comeback win against No. 8 Johns Hopkins, 13-8, at Homewood Field on Wednesday. Maryland (11-3, 4-1 B1G) picked up its fifth-ranked win of the season, with its fourth occurring on the road.  

Johns Hopkins (10-4, 2-2 B1G) scored the game's first three goals to claim an early first-quarter lead. Maryland responded with five unanswered goals and used its suffocating defense to never falter the lead. The Ospreys tied the game 5-5 at halftime, but the Terps outscored them 8-3 in the second half.

Freshman Lauren LaPointe recorded her first career goal in the first quarter and added two more scores throughout the game to finish with her first career hat trick. Kori Edmondson also scored a hat trick, her fourth of the season. 

  The Terps' defense held the Blue Jays scoreless for 16:33 spanning through the first and second quarters. Emily Sterling made 13 saves, one shy of her season high, in the cage and Meghan Ball caused three turnovers. Ball won four draw controls and picked up three groundballs. 

Libby May and Chrissy Thomas scored two goals apiece. Hannah Leubecker and Eloise Clevenger created for their teammates, each finishing with one goal and two assists. It was Leubecker's fifth career game with multiple assists. Clevenger picked up a game-high four groundballs. 

The Terps held a commanding 19-6 advantage in the draw circle as Shannon Smith won a career-high 11 draws. 

Maryland has never lost to Johns Hopkins, winning all 26 meetings in the two schools' history.


Breaking Down The Action
  • Johns Hopkins scored the game's first three goals, but Maryland responded with four consecutive goals to take a 4-3 after the first stanza. Kori Edmondson scored twice and Libby May and Lauren LaPointe added scores. 
  • May scored her second goal in the second quarter to make it five unanswered goals for the Terps. The Ospreys got back on the board with two goals to enter halftime tied 5-5. 
  • Johns Hopkins scored one goal in the third, while Maryland netted three. Chrissy Thomas scored twice and LaPointe scored her second of the game. The Terps led 8-6 entering the final frame.
  • The Terps put the game away by scoring five goals in the final game. LaPointe and Edmondson scored to give them hat tricks. Hannah Leubecker, Maisy Clevenger and Eloise Clevenger joined the scoring column and the Terps celebrated a 13-8 win.

  • Lauren LaPointe (three goals) notched the first career game of her career with multiple goals.
  • Chrissy Thomas (two goals and one assist) had the 18th multi-point game of her career. It was her eighth game with multiple goals.
  • Hannah Leubecker (one goal and two assists) notched her 57th career. It was her fifth game with multiple assists.  
  • Eloise Clevenger (one goal and two assists) had the 47th multi-point game of her career. It was her 32nd game with multiple assists.
  • Libby May (two goals) recorded the 62nd multi-point game of her career. It was her 56th career game with multiple goals. 
Terps On The Charts 
  • Shaylan Ahearn is third in program history with 391 draw-control wins. She added to her total with four on Wednesday. Next on the list is Kali Hartshorn (2017-20), who had 421 in her career.
  • Eloise Clevenger is fourth on the all-time assists list. She had two in the game and has 122 in her career. She's 11 assists from passing Kelly Amonte (1993-96) and Alex Aust (2010-13) who're tied for second with 132 career assists.
  • Emily Sterling is fourth on the career saves list and added 13 in the game. She now has 631 in her career. Third place is Marylynne Morgan (1981-84) with 720 career saves. 
  • Hannah Leubecker is eighth on the career goals list with 199 in her career. She's just seven goals from passing Caroline Steele (2016-19) and claiming seventh place. 
  • Libby May is 10th on the career goals list with 191 in her career. She's seven goals from passing Brooke Griffin (2011-15) and taking ninth place.
Nationwide Domination
  • Maryland is the winningest program in women's lacrosse, currently standing with a 785-160-3 record all-time. It boasts the highest winning percentage of all time. 
  • Head Coach Cathy Reese is the fifth all-time winningest active head coach and the seventh-winningest coach of all-time in Division I women's lacrosse at 357-72. She also owns the second-best winning percentage. 
  • Former Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal is the all-time winningest women's lacrosse coach with 572 wins.
  • In nine seasons in the Big Ten (no 2020 due to COVID-19), Maryland is 49-8 in Big Ten regular season play and 60-11 overall including the Big Ten Tournament.

  • Maryland has never lost to Johns Hopkins, winning all 26 meetings in the two schools' history. 
  • Last year, the Terps defeated Johns Hopkins in College Park, 13-12. They overcame a fourth-quarter deficit and pulled away late thanks to key goals from Libby May, Shaylan Ahearn and Kori Edmondson
  • Chrissy Thomas led the way offensively with five points on a goal and four assists. May, Ahearn and Edmondson each recorded hat tricks, while Victoria Hensh notched a pair of goals. Shannon Smith also scored to round out the offense.
  • Defensively, Brianna Lamoureux scooped four ground balls and caused two turnovers, while Emily Sterling grabbed six saves.
