No. 4 Terps Lose Conference Finale To No. 24 Penn State, 12-11

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 4 Maryland women's lacrosse was defeated by No. 24 Penn State, 12-11, on Senior Day Saturday at Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. 

Penn State (8-6, 3-2 B1G) rallied to take its first lead of the game at 1:26 in the third quarter and stretched its lead to two goals early in the fourth. Maryland (11-4, 4-2 B1G) tied the game with back-to-back goals from Eloise Clevenger at 8:53 but Lauren Saltz scored the go-ahead goal, and Brooke Hoss followed with the game-deciding goal. 

Hannah Leubecker scored one final time for the Terps but the Nittany Lions secured the win despite the Terps claiming an early first-quarter lead.

Leubecker scored her 200th career goal at 11:06 in the first quarter and netted a total of four goals in the contest for her seventh hat trick of the season. The fifth-year attacker is now eighth on Maryland's career leaderboard with 203 goals. 

Chrissy Thomas also recorded a third hat trick. It was the third of her career and first of the season. She finished with a season-high three goals and finished in a three-way tie alongside Leubecker and Clevenger (two goals and two assists) with four points. 

Maryland provided a strong defensive effort as Penn State was held scoreless for 18:42 through the second and third quarters, including the entire second frame. 

Emily Sterling made four saves between the pipes and Meghan Ball set a new Maryland career-high with five caused turnovers to lead Maryland's defense. Ball also won three draw controls and picked up two groundballs. Brianna Lamoureux supplied two caused turnovers.


Breaking Down The Action
  • Libby May scored the game's opening goal less than a minute in off a feed from Chrissy Thomas. Penn State answered but Maryland proceeded to score five unanswered goals from Hannah Leubecker, Victoria Hensh and two from Thomas. The run ended with two goals in the final minute but the Terps led 6-3 after the first frame. 
  • The Terps held the Nittany Lions scoreless for the entire second quarter. Thomas scored the lone goal for the Terps and she already had a hat trick. Maryland led 7-3 at halftime. 
  • Penn State took its first lead of the game in the third quarter and boasted a 9-8 lead heading into the final frame. Leubecker scored the only goal for Maryland in the third. 
  • The Nittany Lions took a 10-8 lead at 10:41 in the fourth. But Eloise Clevenger scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 8:53. Penn State responded with goals of its own and Leubecker cut the lead to one at 2:42. However, Penn State held on to win.

  • Hannah Leubecker (four goals) notched the 58th game of her career with multiple points. It was her 55th game with multiple goals. 
  • Chrissy Thomas (three goals and one assist) had the 19th multi-point game of her career. It was her 10th game with multiple goals.
  • Eloise Clevenger (two goals and two assists) had the 48th multi-point game of her career. It was her 33rd game with multiple assists and It was her 25th with multiple goals.  
Terps On The Charts 
  • Shaylan Ahearn is third in program history with 391 draw-control wins. She added to her total with two on Saturday. Next on the list is Kali Hartshorn (2017-20), who had 421 in her career.
  • Eloise Clevenger is third on the all-time assists list. She had two in the game and has 124 in her career. She's nine assists from passing Kelly Amonte (1993-96) and Alex Aust (2010-13) who're tied for second with 132 career assists.
  • Emily Sterling is fourth on the career saves list and added four in the game. She now has 635 in her career. Third place is Marylynne Morgan (1981-84) with 720 career saves. 
  • Hannah Leubecker is eighth on the career goals list with 203 in her career. She's just four goals from passing Caroline Steele (2016-19) and claiming seventh place. 
  • Libby May is 10th on the career goals list with 192 in her career. She's six goals from passing Brooke Griffin (2011-15) and taking ninth place.
