Maryland Softball Travels To Wisconsin For Final Weekend Series

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland softball team will travel to Madison, Wisconsin to face the Wisconsin Badgers in the final weekend series of the season. The action kicks off Friday, May 3 with the first game starting at 6:00 p.m. EST.  Saturday's game begins at 2:00 p.m., while the series concludes on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 EST. All three games between Maryland and Wisconsin will be scheduled to be live streamed via B1G+ and live stats will be available for all three games.

  • Wisconsin is 19-27 this season.  They have a team batting average of .271 which ranks 148th in the country. In the circle, the Badgers have a team ERA of 4.43. 
  • At the plate, they are led by Ava Kuszak who is second on the team with a .328 batting average and is first in hits (45). Emmy Wells also plays a key role in the offense for Wisconsin as she leads the team in RBIs (30) and home runs (14). Diamond Williams is currently batting .323 this season and her 13 home runs on the season leads the team. This season, Williams 13 home runs rank fourth in the conference.
  • Maryland is currently 4-5 all-time against Wisconsin with their last meeting coming in 2023. The Terps would defeat Wisconsin 3-2 in College Park.

  • Maryland softball lost 2-1 to Purdue in game one at Maryland Softball Stadium on Friday.
  • Courtney Wyche held a shutout up until the final inning. She finished her complete outing with 10 strikeouts while allowing just three hits. She has 195 strikeouts on the year, ranking first among all pitchers in the Big Ten Conference. Maryland scored its lone run on Sydney Lewis's RBI single. She drove home Mazie MacFarlane at the bottom of the first after she got on base with a two-out double.
  • On Saturday, Michaela Jones walked it off for Maryland softball with her second home run of the game in the 10th inning. Maryland defeated Purdue, 5-4, as a result of her two-run shot at Maryland Softball Stadium on Senior Day.
  • Purdue scored three of its runs in the top of the seventh inning, including a go-ahead run, but Jaeda McFarland came through with an RBI double to extend th game. The Boilermakers added a run in the 10th, but once again the Terps responded. Courtney Wyche earned the win by going three innings and striking out seven batters.
  • Julia Shearer provided a dominant outing starting in the circle. The freshman went 6.1 innings, struck out a career-high five batters and surrendered just five hits and zero earned runs. She even matched her career-best strikeout mark in the first inning after striking out the side.
  • McFarland went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and added a stolen base. She tripled for the 21st of her career, adding to her program record. The stolen base was the 68th of her career, which is second in school history behind Megan Mikami. Mikami went 3-for-5 with two runs.
  • Maryland softball lost to Purdue, 7-1, in a rubber match at Maryland Softball Stadium on Sunday.

  • Coastal Carolina transfer Diamond Williams continues to make her impact on this Maryland team. Diamond has started in all 49 games at first base.
  • Williams currently is third on the team in batting average (.323) and second in hits (52).  But leads the team in RBIs (38) and HRs (13). Williams is fourth in the Big Ten in home runs this year.  
  • Williams would stand out in her first six Big Ten conference series. She is currently batting .275 with 19 hits including three HR's and 10 RBI's.
  • Graduate student Mazie MacFarlane also made her presence known. The right fielder from Utah State missed all of last season with an injury but has provided an immediate impact with her bat and her glove this season. Mazie has started in 48 of the 49 games for the Terps this season. She is currently second on the team in batting average with .326 and is fourth on the team in hits with 42.    
  • MacFarlane would finish her first five weekends in Big Ten Conference play hitting .349 with 15 hits and four RBI's. She would also record a HR and two RBI's after her first conference series against Minnesota. 
  • Against James Madison, MacFarlane would go 2-for-3 with two HR's including a grand slam and 5 RBIs. MacFarlane would tie her career-high RBI mark. This would be the first multi-HR game of her career and her fifth multi-hit game of the season.

Diamond Williams is currently fourth all-time in program history for most home runs in a single season.

  • Jaeda McFarland is currently third all-time in career batting average with .339 and currently has the school record for most career triples with 21. McFarland is also second in school history in stolen bases with (69).
  • McFarland is second all-time in school history only five runs back from being the all-time program leader in runs with 134 runs scored.
  • With 111 RBIs McFarland is seventh all-time in career RBIs and is only four back from moving into sixth place.
  • McFarland's 38 doubles for her career is tied for seventh all-time in program history for most in a career.
  • McFarland's 211 career hits is fourth all-time and is only two hits back from moving into third place in program history.
