
In Battle Of No. 1 Vs. No. 2, Northwestern Tops Maryland, 17-9

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse was defeated by No. 1 Northwestern, 17-9, at Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Saturday. A sell-out, record-setting 2,400 fans were in attendance for the game. The crowd surpassed the 2,361 fans who attended Maryland's March 24, 2018 game against James Madison.
Maryland (10-3, 3-1 B1G) and Northwestern (11-2, 3-1 B1G) traded goals in the first quarter and set the precedent for a tightly contested back-and-forth affair. The first half featured five lead changes. However, the Wildcats captured a three-goal advantage at halftime and later stretched their lead to as many as nine goals.
The Terps held a 19-10 advantage in the draw circle despite the loss. Shaylan Ahearn led the team with a season-high 10 draw-control wins.
The loss was Maryland's first at home in conference play in 18 seasons under head coach Cathy Reese. The Terps were 48-0 at home under Reese entering the contest.

Breaking Down The Action
- The first 10 minutes of the first quarter featured four lead changes and Maryland and Northwestern were tied at 4-4. Chrissy Thomas, Libby May, Hannah Leubecker and Kori Edmondson scored for the Terps. Northwestern added one goal in the final five minutes and led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.
- Northwestern netted two goals to begin the second quarter and captured a three-goal advantage at 9:08. Leubecker netted her second goal of the game, but the Wildcats added one more goal to lead 8-5 at the half.
- Northwestern connected on six unanswered goals to begin the third stanza and compiled a 14-5 advantage. The Terps finally ended the scoring run at 2:49 with a goal by May, her second of the day. They trailed 14-6 entering the final quarter.
- Eloise Clevenger scored two goals to cut the deficit to six in the fourth. Thomas later added her second goal of the game. However, The Wildcats scored three more times and cruised to a victory.

- Chrissy Thomas (two goals and two assists) had the 17th multi-point game of her career. It was her 10th career game with multiple assists and seventh with multiple goals.
- Hannah Leubecker (two goals) notched her 56th career multi-point game and 54th multi-goal game.
- Libby May (two goals) recorded the 61st multi-point game of her career. It was her 55th career game with multiple goals.
- Eloise Clevenger (two goals) had the 46th multi-point game of her career. It was her 24th with multiple goals.

- Shaylan Ahearn is third in program history with 387 draw-control wins. She added to her total with 10 on Saturday. Next on the list is Kali Hartshorn (2017-20), who had 421 in her career.
- Emily Sterling is fourth on the career saves list and added 10 in the game. She now has 617 in her career. Third place is Marylynne Morgan (1981-84) with 720 career saves.
- Hannah Leubecker moved to eighth on the career goals list with 198 in her career. She passed Brooke Griffin (2011-15) and is nearing Caroline Steele (2016-19) with 205 career goals.
- Libby May moved into ninth place on the career goals list with 189 in her career. She broke a tie with Kelly Amonte (1993-96) and is behind Leukecker.
- 7: Chrissy Thomas recorded multiple goals for the seventh time in her career.
- 10: Thomas notched her 10th career game with multiple assists.
- 10: Shaylan Ahearn recorded 10 or more draw control wins for the 10th time in her career.
