Big First Inning Leads Terps' Game One Win At Boston College, 8-1

CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Maryland baseball scored six runs in the first inning to defeat Boston College, 8-1, in a seven-inning game one doubleheader at Brighton Baseball Field on Saturday. The Terps have won seven of their last eight games. 

Maryland (33-18), ranked a Big Ten best No. 31 in RPI, batted around its lineup in the top of the first inning. Four Terps recorded RBIs in the inning, led by Eddie Hacopian's two-RBI double. Hacopian finished the game 2-for-4. The Terps picked up two insurance runs and relied on an outstanding performance on the mound by Omar Melendez the rest of the way. 

  Kevin Keister blasted a solo home run in the third inning for his seventh long ball of the season. He now has 28 home runs in his four-year career, ranking tied for 12th in program history with Chris Smoot (1989-92) and Kevin Smith (2015-17). Keister also drew a walk in the game, giving him 116 in his career. He is tied with Maxwell Costes (2019-22) for the third most walks in program history. The shortstop notched a team-high three runs and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  
  Boston College (21-26), ranked No. 77 in RPI, was held in check by Melendez. He recorded his first complete game as a Terp while striking out four batters. Melendez also surrendered just four hits and earned his fifth win of the season. Maryland's last complete game (nine innings) came from Ryan Ramsey against Northwestern on April 29, 2022. Ramsey threw a perfect game that day. The last seven inning complete game was accomplished by David Carroll against Manhattan on March 3, 2012.  

Brayden Martin and Michael Iannazzo had multiple knocks, each going 2-for-4. Martin has a three-game multi-hit streak. Devin Russell (two) and Elijah Lambros were the other Terps who drove in runs.  


Breaking Down The Action 
  • Maryland batted around its lineup in the top of the first inning and took a 6-0 lead. It loaded the bases, and Kevin Keister drew an RBI walk for the first run. Sam Hojnar then scored on an error, Devin Russell was awarded an RBI on a hit-by-pitch and Elijah Lambros drew the second RBI walk in the inning. Eddie Hacopian rounded out the scoring with a two-RBI double. 
  • Keister hit a solo home run to left field in the third inning, extending Maryland's lead to 7-0. 
  • Boston College scored in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single.
  • The Terps got the run back in the fifth as Russell recorded a sacrifice fly. They led 8-1. 
  • Omar Melendez retired the three Eagles in the seventh. He pitched a complete game on the mound and earned the win.

  • Kevin Keister drew one walk and has 116 career walks, ranking tied for third in program history with Maxwell Costes (2019-22). Chris Cannan (1991-94) is second with 130 career walks. 
  • Keister hit a home run and now has 28 in his career. He broke a tie with Scott Bronowicz (1995-98) and is now tied for 12th in program history with Chris Smoot (1989-92) and Kevin Smith (2015-17).
