COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 4 seed Maryland women's lacrosse advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals by dominating James Madison, 17-7, on Sunday at Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps (14-5) avenged their loss to the Dukes in the second round last season.
Maryland will play Florida on May 16 in College Park. The game will be televised on ESPNU, and the time will be announced after the second round is complete.
Maryland scored eight unanswered goals to begin the game, holding James Madison (14-6) scoreless for 19:40. At halftime, the Terps had scored 12 goals, their most in an NCAA Tournament game since scoring 15 goals in the first half of a 19-6 win over Duke on May 15, 2022. Maryland finished the game scoring a combined 34 goals in its first two NCAA Tournament games, tying for the fifth-most in school history.
Eloise Clevenger and Kori Edmondson led the Terrapins' offense with career performances. Clevenger scored a season-high eight points (five goals and three assists), the most for a Terp in an NCAA Tournament game since Caroline Steele had eight against Denver in the 2019 quarterfinals. Her five goals were also a career-high. Edmondson recorded a hat trick in the first quarter and later matched her career-high with four goals.
Emily Sterling controlled the game in the cage and made six saves before
Julia Hammerschlag took over in the final frame.
Meghan Ball shined on defense with two caused turnovers, one groundball and three draw controls.
Brianna Lamoureux was another defensive standout, who caused two turnovers and picked up two groundballs.
Other offensive standouts include Chrissy Thomas (one goal and three assists) and
Hannah Leubecker (two goals and one assist).
Shaylan Ahearn won a season-high 11 draws and added two goals. She passed Kali Hartshorn (2017-20) and now ranks second in school history in career draw control wins.
Maryland improved to 28-1 in NCAA Tournament games played in College Park under Head Coach Cathy Reese and has not lost since 2008.

- Maryland jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Kori Edmondson led the way with a hat trick. Eloise Clevenger, Shaylan Ahearn and Hannah Leubecker also scored in the opening period.
