Nittany Lions Steal Game One From Terps, 8-4

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland baseball was defeated by Penn State, 8-4, in game one of its series at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Thursday.

Maryland (34-20, 10-12 B1G) concludes its regular season with a double deader against Penn State tomorrow, May 17 at 1 p.m. The Terps will hold their senior day ceremony before game one. 

Penn State (24-23, 10-12 B1G) led 7-1 in the top of the sixth after a three-run home run. Maryland rallied to score three unanswered runs in the bottom of the inning but couldn't plate the game-tying or go-ahead run.  


Chris Hacopian hit his team-leading 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning. He tied Maxwell Costes for the second most home runs by a freshman in program history. 

  Jacob Orr and Eddie Hacopian helped reinforce Maryland's comeback efforts. Orr belted his third home run of the season, a two-run homer, in the sixth inning. Hacopian followed with an RBI single. Seven different Terps recorded hits in the game. 
  Omar Melendez struck out four batters in four innings as the Terps' starter on the mound. He allowed just one earned run. Alex Walsh pitched the final three scoreless innings.  


Breaking Down The Action 
  • Penn State scored first in the third inning with a solo home run crushed to left field by Kevin Michaels. 
  • Chris Hacopian immediately responded for the Terps, smashing a 381-foot home run deep to left field, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom frame of the third.
  • The Nittany Lions retook a one-run lead in the top of the fourth inning with a single advancing a runner home.
  • Penn State added two runs in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 4-1.
  • Adam Cecere blew open the game, launching a three-run home run to right center, giving Penn State a comfortable 7-1 lead in the sixth. 
  • Maryland cut the Penn State lead down to 7-4 in the bottom frame of the sixth, spearheaded by Jacob Orr's two-run home run and Eddie Hacopian's RBI single.
  • Matt Maloney hit a home run in the final inning to give Penn State a four-run lead.
In The Record Books
  • Kevin Keister drew two walks and has 118 career walks, ranking third in program history. He broke a tie with Maxwell Costes (2019-22) and is chasing Chris Cannan (1991-94) is second with 130 career walks. 
  • Chris Hacopian has 15 home runs, tied for the second-most by a freshman in Maryland history. He's tied with Maxwell Costes, who had 15 in 2019. Jason Maxey holds the record with 17 in 2002.

  • 15: Chris Hacopian hit his 15th home run of the season, tied for the second most in program history by a freshman.
