Terps Secure Series Win At Rutgers, 6-4

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Maryland baseball defeated Rutgers, 6-4, in game two of a doubleheader at Bainton Field on Saturday. The Terps (31-18, 10-11 Big Ten) won the series in the rubber match, having previously won game one on Friday. 

Maryland has won six of its last eight games as it continues its end of season push towards postseason play. 

Maryland and Rutgers (26-21, 4-14 Big Ten) were tied 3-3 until Devin Russell, hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, brought in the go-ahead run. Elijah Lambros followed with a two-RBI double down the infield to add insurance runs. 
  Brayden Martin was the other Terp to drive in a run. He had an RBI single in the third inning and finished the contest 2-for-4 with a run. Six different players scored runs for Maryland.  
  Logan Berrier pitched the final three innings and earned his fifth save of the season. He surrenders just three hits and one run. Maryland now has eight three-inning saves as a team. 

Logan Koester started on the mound and pitched six innings while allowing three runs. He earned his fifth win of the season and struck out two batters.  

Swope's Take 
"It's hard to get a sweep," Head Coach Matt Swope said. "So you're just always focused on trying to get the series win, especially versus a rival of ours and a tough opponent. The conditions weren't great this weekend to for anybody really. So, it was a good day of baseball overall."

Berrier On His Outing 
"I just have a lot of belief in myself and I it also pours in from our guys that they believe in me to shut games down. When you have that type of influence behind you, It always makes it easier to go out there and show up with your best stuff."

Breaking Down The Action 
  • Maryland loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth inning. Eddie Hacopian and Chris Hacopian scored on wild pitches. Brayden Martin added an RBI single, and the Terps took a 3-0 lead. 
  • Rutgers got a run back with a solo home run to right field by Tony Santa Maria in the bottom of the inning.
  • A two-RBI double by Rutgers in the fifth tied the game at 3-3. 
  • The Terps loaded the bases once again in the sixth inning and Devin Russell was hit by a pitch, scoring the go-ahead run. Elijah Lambros followed with a two-RBI double down the infield line. The Terps then led 6-3.
  • The Scarlet Knights made it a two-run game in the seventh by scoring a run off a balk.
  • Logan Berrier earned the save as the Terps turned a double play to end the game.

  • Kevin Keister drew one walk and has 114 in his career, ranking fourth in program history. Maxwell Costes (2019-22) is third with 116 in his career.
