COLLEGE PARK, MD – Six members of the Maryland softball team earned All-Big Ten recognition, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Maryland had one player on the first team and five more on the second team. The Terps also earned an All-Defensive team selection. The teams consist of 18 selections on each team. The Terps have six total sections, the fifth most of any Big Ten program.
Graduate student Jaeda McFarland was selected to the First Team. Graduate students Courtney Wyche, Mazie MacFarlane and Diamond Williams, alongside sophomore Sydney Lewis make up the second team selections.
McFarland, has continued to be one of the best center fielders in the Big Ten this season. McFarland currently leads the team in batting average (.362), stolen bases (19) and hits (63). With eight triples this year McFarland is second in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten for most this season. Her 19 stolen bases rank fourth in the Big Ten. McFarland is currently third all-time in career batting average with .341 and currently has the school record for most career triples with 21. McFarland is also second in school history in stolen bases with (71). McFarland is second all-time in school history only one run back from being the all-time program leader in runs with 139 runs scored. With 112 RBIs, she is seventh all-time in career RBIs and is only three back from moving into sixth place. McFarland's 38 doubles for her career are tied for seventh all-time in program history for most in a career. McFarland's 217 career hits are third all-time and is only two hits back from moving into second place in program history.
McFarland, was also named to the Big Ten All-Defensive team for her work in center field. This season McFarland has made a number of highlight reel catches in center field taking numerous hits away from opponents. She finished the season only comitting three errors and finishing with a .954 fielding percentage. McFarland earns herself postseason awards for the fourth consecutive year.
Wyche is the leader of the Maryland pitching staff. She is 12-14 this season with a 2.84 ERA. Wyche leads the team in innings pitched with 170.1 and strikeouts with 231. Currently, Wyche ranks first in the Big Ten and is fifth in the NCAA in strikeouts. Wyche is fourth in the Big Ten in innings pitched. Against Penn State,
Courtney Wyche struck out a career-high 19 batters in Maryland softball's 2-0 upset win over No. 22 Penn State in nine innings at Nittany Lion Softball Park. Wyche broke the NCAA individual game-high for strikeouts in 2024. In the series finale,
Courtney Wyche made her third appearance, pitching her second complete game, striking out 17 batters and allowing just one run and six hits. Wyche struck out a total of 38 batters and allowed 11 hits and three runs through 22.1 innings pitched in the series.
Williams has been a key member to this Maryland team since transferring over from Coastal Carolina. She has started in all 52 games this season at first base and leads the Big Ten in putouts. Williams is third on the team in batting average (.327) and second in hits (56). But leads the team in HRs (13). Williams is fourth in the Big Ten in home runs this year. Williams would stand out in Big Ten conference play this season. She finished the season batting .291 with 23 hits including three HR's and 10 RBI's against Big Ten opponents.
MacFarlane has also been a key additional to this Maryland team since transferring over from Utah State. MacFarlane missed last season with an injury but has provided an immediate impact with her bat and her glove this season. She has started in 51 of the 52 games this season. MacFarlane is currently second on the team in batting average with .340 and is fourth on the team in hits with 48. MacFarlane would finish her first year in the Big Ten hitting .358 with 24 hits and eight RBIs. She would record a HR and two RBIs after her first conference series. Against James Madison, she would go 2-for-3 with two HRs including a grand slam and 5 RBIs. MacFarlane would finish the season batting .358 against Big Ten opponents this year.
Lewis leads the Terps in RBIs this season with 41 and has made massive jumps from her freshman season. The Prosper, Texas native, has started in all 52 games in the DP position. Lewis has had a career year in doubles, RBIs and HRs as a sophomore. Lewis is coming off of a 3-3 game against Wisconsin this past weekend and driving in 3 RBIs to help Maryland secure its first series sweep this season against Wisconsin. She finished the season hitting .295 with 23 hits and 19 RBIs in conference play.
Megan Mikami was named Maryland's sportsmanship honoree. The sportsmanship award is awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Mikami is the all-time program leader in stolen bases in a career with 77. Mikami has led the Big Ten in stolen bases in back-to-back years.
The No. 10 seeded Terps open up the Big Ten tournament this Wednesday, May 8 against No. 7 Penn State at 5:30 p.m. at Pearl Field in Iowa City, Iowa. With a win, the Terps will advance to the Big Ten Quarterfinals to face Michigan which will take place on Thursday, May 9.
