COLLEGE PARK, MD -- It's time to take a look at how some of our current Terps are performing through the first two weeks of summer ball. We have some hitters leading their teams and leagues in multiple categories, and some strong pitching performances in multiple leagues.
New England Collegeiate Baseball League
DEVIN RUSSELL, SANFORD MAINERS
Russell has been behind the dish for the Mainers in three games this season, with eight total at-bats this summer. Russell picked up his first hit with the Mainers on June 15 via a double as part of a 1-3 game with a walk and scoring a run.
CHRIS HACOPIAN, MARTHA'S VINEYARD SHARKS
Hacopian has played in all but one of the games for Martha's Vineyard to start the summer, and is one of the team's leading hitters. Through seven games Hacopian is hitting for a team-leading .333 average with two doubles and an RBI. Hacopian most recently had a 3-4 game and scored a run for the Sharks.
BRAYDEN MARTIN, MARTHA'S VINEYARD SHARKS
Martin has been picking up with the bat as of later for the Sharks. In his last four games, Martin is batting .357 with a double and four runs scored. Martin has been playing all over the diamond for the Sharks, making starts for the Sharks at second, center field, and left field. Martin's patient approach at the plate has continued in the NECBL, as he leads the team with six walks and is sixth on the team with a .407 on-base percentage.
ALEX CALARCO, KEENE SWAMPBATS
Calarco has been showing the power stroke for the SwampBats through their first 11 games. Calarco is hitting for a .267 average with four doubles, two home runs, and eight RBI. Calarco hit his most recent home run for Keene in its 16-9 win over Vermont on June 14.
RYAN VAN BUREN, KEENE SWAMPBATS
Van Buren has made two starts for the SwampBats this summer. Van Buren made his first start for Keene on June 7, going five innings and striking out four batters to earn the win. Through two starts, Van Buren has a 1-1 record, with five strikeouts.
ELIJAH LAMBROS, NORTH ADAMS STEEPLECATS
Lambros has played in eight games for the SteepleCats this season, and has produced some big hits for the squad. Lambros clubbed his second home run of the summer back on June 12 against the Valley Blue Sox on a two-run shot to give North Adams a 4-2 in the top of the 10th inning. Lambros has two home runs and four RBI this summer.
MICHAEL IANNAZZO, DANBURY WESTERNERS
Iannazzo has been one of the hottest hitters in the Westerners lineup. Iannazzo leads the team with a .342 batting average, which ranks in the top 10 of the NECBL. In addition to his .342 average, Iannazzo has two RBI and has hit two doubles. Not only does Iannazzo lead the Westerners in batting average, but also leads the team with a .432 on-base percentage.
JACOB ORR, DANBURY WESTERNERS
Orr got his first start for Danbury in its season-opener on June 4 against the Bristol Blues, starting the game in right field. That unfortunately has been the only action for Orr this summer, as an injury has sidelined him for most of the season.
ANDREW JOHNSON, DANBURY WESTERNERS
Johnson has been lights out for the Westerners out of the pen so far this season. In 3.2 innings pitched, Johnson has a 0.00 ERA, five strikeouts, and is holding opposing hitters to a .154 batting average. In his first appearances for the Westerners on June 5, Johnson picked up his first save of the season.
APPALACHIAN LEAGUE
DUKE MCCARRON, KINGSPORT AXMEN
McCarron has made four appearances for the Axmen in the Appalachian League out of the bullpen. McCarron leads the team with two wins on the season and is fifth on the team with eight strikeouts.
Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League
JORDAN CROSLAND, BETHESDA BIG TRAIN
Crosland has played in 14 games for the Big Train this season, primarily starting for the team at second base. In those 14 games, Crosland has a double, a home run, and six RBI. Crosland has also picked up ten walks this season, and has an on-base percentage of .397.
EVAN SMITH, BETHESDA BIG TRAIN
Smith has made three appearances and three starts for the Big Train, holding a 1-2 record so far this summer. Smith has struck out 10 batters in 9.1 innings of work and has only walked two batters. In his first appearance with Bethesda on June 1, Smith threw four innings, striking out five batters and allowing only five hits.
EJ HANKERSON, ALEXANDRIA ACES
Hankerson has played in 10 games for the Alexandria Aces, who have the best record in the entirety of the Ripken League. Hankerson had a strong day at the plate for the Aces on June 14, going 2-4, hitting a triple and scoring a run in a 3-2 win. This season, Hankerson has a .235 average, with a double, a triple, and an RBI.
