Pro Terps Baseball Report (June Update)

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- As we pass the first two months of the MLB season, we get into our first Terp Baseball pro update of the season. Many of our former Terps are seeing success at all levels of the majors, with multiple players having graduated to new levels in the minors. Let's get into the update.
 
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL (MLB)
LAMONTE WADE JR., SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
Before picking up a hamstring injury in the end of May, Wade Jr. was one of the hottest hitters in the senior circuit. The first baseman was hitting for a .33 average with two home runs and 17 RBI. More impressive, the Owings Mills native had an on-base percentage of .470 with 33 walks to just 35 strikeouts.
BRANDON LOWE, TAMPA BAY RAYS
Lowe recently returned from an injury that sidelined him since the month of April. Lowe is starting to get back in the swing of things as of late, batting .294 with four RBI in his last seven games. One of Lowe's notable appearances since returning from his injury was against the Oakland Athletics back on May 29, as he went 2-3 with a pair of extra-base hits.
JOSE CUAS, CHICAGO CUBS

Cuas has competed between Chicago and Iowa during the 2024 season, having made nine appearances with the big league club. Since returning to Iowa back on May 29, Cuas has had two relief appearances, throwing an inning in each while picking up a save and striking out five batters.

KEVIN SMITH, NEW YORK YANKEES
After beginning the season in AAA with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Kevin Smith got the call-up the the mojor league squad. Smith made his 2024 debut with the Yankees April 14 before making his second appearance on May 26. Smith returned to AAA on May 28, and in has played a total of 33 games this season for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In those 33 games, Smith has seven doubles, a home run, and 13 RBI. 
MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL (MILB)
ADAM KOLAREK, LOS ANGELES ANGELS
Kolarek continues to ply his trade in the professsional baseball, as the 35 year old is now with the Los Angeles Angels with their AAA affiliate the Salt Lake City Bees. Kolarek has made 17 appearances for the Bees in 2024, picking up one save on the season with 20 strikeouts across 17.2 innings.
 
NICK DUNN, ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
Dunn has taken his strong 2023 and is continuing to find success in 2024. Dunn finished the 2023 campaign with a .319 batting average with nine home runs and 60 RBI. In his first full season in AAA with the Memphis Redbirds, Dunn is hitting for a .292 batting average with four home runs and eight RBI in 30 games.
HUNTER PARSONS, NEW YORK METS
Parsons has bounced between AA and AAA during the 2024 season, making five appearances at both stops and making one start in AAA. Across both levels Parsons has a 1-1 record, striking out 19 in 12 innings of work. 

SEAN BURKE, CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Burke has made four starts, three coming on a rehab assignment in and his most recent being back in AAA. Burke is returning from the 60-day IL after recovering from an injury that ended his 2023 campaign and the beginning of the 2024 season. Burke returned to the White Sox AAA afilitate in Charlotte and made his first start on May 31. Burke went three innings in his that outing, allowing just three hits and striking out an impressive eight batters.
JOHN MURPHY, CINCINNATI REDS
Murphy's has had a strong start in his return to High-A Dayton this season. The righty had a very productive first year in the minors in 2023, which saw him make an appearance in AAA. So far in the 2024 season, Murphy has made nine appearances, picking up a save and striking out 10 batters in 11.2 innings of work.

BENJAMIN COWLES, NEW YORK YANKEES
To say that Benjamin Cowles is having one of his best starts to a season in the minors might be an understatement. Cowles has begun the season with a .310 average with four home runs and an eye-catching 31 RBI. Cowles currently ranks in the top five in the Eastern League in doubles (17; 2nd), triples (3, T-2nd), average (.310, 3rd), slugging percentage (.515, 3rd), and hits (53; 4th), while also ranking in the top 10 in RBI.
RYAN RAMSEY, KANSAS CITY ROYALS
Ramsey is now in his second full season in the minors, and his first full season with the High A Quad City River Bandits. Ramsey has featured in relief and starting for the River Bandits, with his most recent appearance being his second start of the year. Ramsey has made nine total appearances for the River Bandits in 2024, striking out 36 batters in 29.1 innings of work while holding opposing batters to a .178 batting average.

MAXWELL COSTES, BALTIMORE ORIOLES
Costes is in his third stint with the High-A Aberdeen Ironbirds, having returned to the team after a rehab assignment with Single-A Delmarva. Costes played in 14 games with Delmarva, finishing his assignment with a .261 batting average and four RBI. He made his return to Aberdeen on May 14, and has played in 13 games and driven in three runs.
 
MARTY COSTES, FLORIDA MARLINS
Costes has moved to the Florida Marlins organization after being selected by the team in the Rule 5 Draft back in December of 2023. In his first season in the organization, Costes has played the entire season with AAA Jacksonville. So far in 2024, Costes is hitting for a .236 batting average with three home runs and 16 RBI.
 
TROY SCHREFFLER JR., PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
Schreffler Jr. is in his first season with High A Jersey Shore after spending some time with the team in 2023. Schreffler Jr. has played in 22 games in his 2024 campaign, and to this point in the season has three doubles, three triples, three home runs, and 10 RBI with a slugging percentage of .478.

CHRIS ALLEYNE, LOS ANGELES DODGERS
Alleyne finished his second season in High A and impressed the Dodgers organization enough to get the call-up to AA Tulsa for the 2024 season. Alleyne has had a tremendous start to his first foray in AA, hitting for a .300 average with five doubles, three triples, and 14 RBI in 33 games.

MATT SHAW, CHICAGO CUBS
After an amazing start to his professional career, which ended with a league title, Shaw is now in his first full season of professional baseball. After finishing the season with the AA Tennessee Smokies, Shaw has begun the 2024 season with the team. Shaw had an extended stay in spring training with the Chicago Cubs and made a play for an opening-day roster spot. Shaw's bat has been heating up for the Smokies as he has 10 hits and three home runs over his last seven games. This season, Shaw has six home runs, 22 RBI and has stolen 13 bases.
NICK LORUSSO, NEW YORK METS
Nick Lorusso has settled in as the Monroe, Connecticut native is in his first full year of pro baseball. Lorusso has started the season with the High A Brooklyn Cyclones and has been a major producers for the team. Lorusso ranks in the top 10 in the South Atlantic League in home runs (seven) and runs batted in (27). Lorusso was recently named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week on May 27 after finishing with .500 batting average and three home runs
JASON SAVACOOL, ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
Savacool is also in his first full season in the minors, pitching for the Single A Palm Beach Cardinals. Savacool has made nine appearances for the Cardinals, eight of which have been starts. Savacool has a 1-2 record to this point in the season, with 31 strikeouts in 36.1 innings and holding opposing batters to a .237 average.

NICK DEAN, CHICAGO CUBS

Dean has had a dream start to his first season in the minors. After starting the season in Single A with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the right-hander was promoted to High A South Bend after seven appearances and three starts. Across those seven appearance with Myrtle Beach, Dean had a 2-0 record with a 2.33 ERA 36 strikeouts in 27.0 innings with a 0.96 WHIP. Dean has continued that success in South Bend, making two starts and allowing zero runs in each start and opposing hitter batting .094 against him. He has won both starts and struck out six batters, allowing just three hits in just 10 innings.
NIGEL BELGRAVE, FLORIDA MARLINS

Like the aforementioned Nick Dean, Belgrave has also had a spectacular start to the 2024 season. Belgrave began the year with the Jupiter Hammerheads, making 10 appearances. Belgrave compiled a 1-0 record with five saves and a dazzling 0.66 ERA. Belgrave got the promotion to High A Beloit and has continuned his early season success. In eight games with the Sky Carp, Belgrave has a 1-0 record with a save and a 1.32 ERA, while opposing batters are hitting a measly .087 against him. Across both levels to start the season, Belgrave has a 2-0 record, six saves, 0.99 ERA, 32 strikeouts, across 18 games and 27.1 innings pitched.
LUKE SHLIGER, SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
The former starting catcher for the Terrapins is in the midst of his second pro season in the San Francisco Giants organization. Shliger is back with the San Jose Giants in 2024, and has played in 34 games. To this point in the season, Shliger has seven doubles, three triples, and six stolen bases to go along with 11 RBI.

TOMMY KANE, SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
Kane joining his teammate Shliger with the San Jose Giants, Kane has had an impressive 2024 season to this point. The left-hander has made 13 appearances for the Giants and has a 2-2 record on the season with two saves with a 2.37 ERA. Kane has struck out 23 batters across 19.1 innings, while holding opposing batters to a .237 batting average.
