COLLEGE PARK, MD - No. 4 Maryland field hockey will begin the 2024 campaign with two home games in College Park this weekend as No. 7 Louisville and Drexel will travel to College Park.

Maryland opens the regular season with the No. 4 position in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division 1 National Coaches Poll. The Terps received 771 votes including two first place selections. This rank is one place lower than last year's preseason ranking.
The Terps are returning six starters from last year's team that made the NCAA quarterfinals. Maryland owns a great mix of veteran players on the roster as the team's two leading goal scorers Hope Rose and Maci Bradford return for another year in College Park.
The Maryland roster displays depth at each position including 2023 NFHCA All-American First Team Hope Rose leading the offense. On the defensive side, Goalie Alyssa Klebasko and defender Rayne Wright earned NFHCA Mid-Atlantic First Team honors and will anchor the defense this year.

In 2023, the Louisville field hockey team posted a 15-7 overall record and made its fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, reaching the quarterfinals for the third time in the last five years. Louisville also went 3-3 in ACC play and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Cards finished the season at No. 10 in the NFHCA Coaches' poll after spending 10 weeks ranked among the nation's the top 10, reaching as high as No. 4.
The Cardinals return 16 letter-winners from last year's squad including Plumb and fellow fifth-year senior All-America selection Mia Duchars. Louisville also welcomes nine newcomers with eight freshmen and one transfer. Aimee Plumb was named to the 2024 Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team as voted on by the league's head coaches. The Cardinals were picked to finish in a tie for fourth in the preseason poll. Justine Sowry is entering her 14th season at the helm. During her tenure, Sowry has guided the Cardinals to nine NCAA tournament appearances, advancing to the quarterfinals in three of the last five years and reaching the semifinals in 2020.
In 2023, the Drexel field hockey team posted a 14-6 overall record. Drexel also went 4-2 in CAA play and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. Pien Elsen and Valentine Van Hellemont of Drexel field hockey were selected to the Preseason All-CAA team. Additionally, Liz Chipman earned an honorable mention. Elsen was named to the All-CAA Second and All-CAA Rookie teams last season. The Rotterdam, Netherlands native ended her freshman campaign with 16 points, tallying six times and adding four assists. She helped lead the Dragons the CAA Championships after scoring the game-winning goal in double overtime over Northeastern. Van Hellemont was named CAA Rookie of the Year and earned a CAA First Team knock in 2023. The attacker led the Dragons in goals with 12, finishing second on the team in points with 28.

The Terrapins return multiple key players at all positions.
Hope Rose was the Terps' leading scorer at the end of the 2023 campaign with 28 points from 13 goals and two assists. She returns to College Park for her senior season. She is joined by sophomore Maci Bradford, who ended the year with 25 points from ten goals and five assists.
Rayne Wright returns for her fifth season after spending four years with the Terps. Wright was a team captain for the 2023 season and started in all 23 games. Wright helped shutdown some of the nation's best offensive players and was named to the 2023 All-Big Ten First Team. Starting in every game this past season Wright recorded nearly 1,300 minutes of action on the back line.
Emma Deberdine will return to College Park for her graduate season. DeBerdine, a two-time All-American, spent her undergraduate career as a Terp with plans to return to College Park and use her remaining year of eligibility for the 2024 season.
The Lancaster, Pennsylvania native, started in 75 of the 76 games she played in, tallying 69 points from 23 goals and 23 assists. DeBerdine has multiple accolades during her undergraduate career, including two NFHCA All-American honors and two All-Big Ten recognitions.
The two-time All-American will return to College Park after representing the United States in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Fresh faces

Maryland welcomes nine new additions to the Terrapin family, including two transfers and seven freshmen.
Transfer student Alina Gerke (Vermont) adds a veteran touch to the roster coming to Maryland for her senior year. Fleur Knopert (Ball State) will join the Terps after playing two years at Ball State and will have two years of remaining eligibility in College Park.
During her junior season at Vermont, Gerke was named to the American East All-Conference First Team for the second straight year. She started in all 18 games in the midfield and set career highs in goals (10) and points (22).
At Ball State, Knopert played in all 18 games at forward and led the team in goals (13) and points (28).
Freshmen Callie Rogers, Ella Gaitan, Adèle Jardemar, Annemijn Klijnhout, Kristina Johnson, AJ Eyre, and Ellie Goldstein all bring in a collection of unique skill sets, adding great depth at all positions.
Eyre was one of six Terps that represented the University of Maryland in the 2024 Senior Nexus Championship in Virginia Beach this summer. The Senior NXC is held annually and features 144 elite collegiate and post-collegiate athletes. During the spring and early summer, athletes trialed and trained at one of the seven USA Field Hockey High Performance Centers throughout the country for an opportunity to be selected to the Senior NXC.
Eyre was a three-sport athlete in high school playing field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse. Eyre was named the 2023 Howard County Times Player of the Year and led the state of Maryland in total points during her senior season.

This year, Maryland will be celebrating 50 years of the historic field hockey program.
Under Hall of Fame coaches Sue Tyler and Missy Meharg the Terps have epitomize the word dominance in field hockey.
With eight NCAA titles, Maryland is third most among all Division 1 schools.
The Terps have reached the Final Four a historic 21 times and has an all-time winning percentage above 75 percent.
Maryland currently has the longest active streak of NCAA tournament appearances, with 28 consecutive bids.
Maryland is just six wins away from 800 program wins.

The 1973-1974 Maryland Terrapins was the first team in College Park.

Championship coaching

Missy Meharg returns for her 37th season as head coach. A nine-time National Coach of the Year recipient, Meharg brings an unprecedented level of consistency and excellence to the Maryland field hockey program.
Meharg became the third coach in Division I history to reach 600 wins in 2021. She is not shy of championships as she has lead the Terps to seven national titles, including five in seven years,12 conference tournament crowns,15 conference regular season titles and 19 appearances in the NCAA Semifinals round, including 12 in the NCAA Finals.
She is supported by associate head coach Scott Tupper (fourth season), assistant coach Kasey Tapman Asper (fourth season) and goalie specialist Jenny Rizzo (first season).
