Terps Fall In Four Sets At LSU

BATON ROUGE, LA – Maryland volleyball was defeated by LSU, 3-1, (22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20) at the LSU Tournament on Aug. 30. 

After losing the first set, the Terps won the second after LSU threatened with a 10-3 run. They recorded 11 kills and four blocks in the stanza. However, the Tigers (2-0) closed out the match by winning the final two sets. A 7-0 run in the fourth set sealed LSU's win. 

Fifth-year outside hitter Sam Csire led the Terps with 14 kills, Fifth-year setter Sydney Dowler led the Terps with 27 assists and Fifth-year libero Lilly Gunter also led the Terps with 15 digs. 

  Graduate pin hitter Samantha Schnitta fell just short of a double-double, totaling eight kills and nine digs. Sophomore middle blocker Eva Rohrbach and Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Bryant also performed well, with five kills and four digs and eight kills and four digs, respectively.  
 
Breaking Down The Action

Set 1: LSU 25 - Maryland 22
  • Maryland jumped to a 2-0 lead off an LSU service error and Anastasia Russ block. 
  • The Tigers equalized at two, but the Terps followed with a four-point run featuring kills from Sydney Bryant, Samantha Schnitta, and Eva Rohrbach to go up 6-4.
  • LSU brought it back to seven apiece before Maryland retook a 9-7 lead off consecutive LSU attack errors. 
  • The teams traded points for most of the remaining first set, reaching their eleventh tie at 22-22. 
  • LSU ultimately took the first set with a 3-0 run.  
  • Maryland led the set in blocks, putting up five to LSU's three. 
Set 2: Maryland 25 - LSU 22
  • LSU took an early 4-2 lead before Maryland went on a 7-1 run to force a Tiger timeout. The run included a clutch Lilly Gunter service ace. 
  • The Terps added three more points off an LSU attack error, Aly Kirkhoff service ace and a Sam Csire kill, upping the score to 12-5. 
  • Maryland continued to dominate in the set, following with a 7-3 run. Bryant and Csire notched kills across this stretch, forcing the Tigers to call another timeout. 
  • Two more kills from Schnitta and a Bryant kill put the Terps up 21-12.
  • LSU threatened with a 10-3 run, but Schnitta iced the set with a huge kill that slipped off the hand of a Tiger player. 
Set 3: LSU 25 - Maryland 20
  • The Terps started the set, 2-0, with a Csire kill and an LSU attack error. The teams then played back-and-forth until the Tigers took an 8-5 lead. 
  • The teams continued trading points before Maryland tied it up at 10 apiece, keyed by a Dowler service ace. 
  • More kills from Schnitta and Csire, and a couple of LSU errors kept the Terps on pace with the Tigers, upping the score to 14-14. 
  • Consecutive kills from Rohrbach and Csire quickly thwarted a 3-0 LSU run. 
  • Despite kills from Dowler and Schnitta, the Tigers were able to close out the set. 
Set 4: LSU 25 - Maryland 20
  • Maryland surged to a 4-0 lead, with consecutive kills from Csire, Rohrbach and Dowler, followed by an LSU attack error which sent the Tigers into a timeout. 
  • The teams alternated short runs, which included another Schnitta kill, until the Tigers equalized at 8-8. They tied again at 9 and 10 apiece. 
  • LSU then went on a seven-point run, which was halted by a Csire kill.
  • Maryland capitalized on a handful of LSU errors and a Zoe Huang service ace in hopes of disrupting Tigers late-set momentum, but LSU was able to hang in and claim the set.

  • 1: Freshman Katie Scherer made her collegiate debut. 
  • 2: Maryland is 2-0 against the Tigers all-time. The last time the Terps faced LSU was in 1994 when they won 3-2.
  • 3: Three Terps recorded five or more digs. 
  • 4: Four Terps recorded five or more kills. 
  • 193: Csire has 193 career blocks, inching closer to the milestone of 200.
