Terps Drop Final Match At LSU Tournament Against New Hampshire, 3-2

BATON ROUGE, LA -- Maryland volleyball's comeback effort came up just short, as they fell to New Hamshire 3-2, (22-25, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-12 ) in its final match at the LSU Tournament on Aug. 31. 

Despite losing the first two sets, the Terps (1-2) won the third set after going on an 8-0 run. Kills from Katie Scherer and Sam Csire highlighted the run. The Terps continued their comeback effort in the fourth set, edging out a 26-24 win. The Terps mounted a late comeback in the fifth set, but came up short falling 15-12.

Senior setter Zoe Huang led the Terps with a career-high 29 assists. She also added 12 digs for her first career double-double. Fifth-year setter Sydney Dowler added 18 assists. 

Fifth-year libero Lilly Gunter led Maryland in digs, totaling 23. Fifth-year outside hitter Sam Csire led Maryland with 20 kills. 

Freshman Katherine Scherer also made an impact, recording her first career kill and block in the match. 


Breaking Down The Action

Set 1: New Hampshire 25 - Maryland 22 

 
  • New Hampshire went on a 6-1 run to lead early in the first set. 
  • The Wildcats then went on a 5-0 run with three kills and two attack errors to lead 12-4. 
  • A 7-2 run by the Terps cut the deficit to two, highlighted by two kills from Sam Csire
  • Despite bringing the score within one after a kill by Samantha Schnitta, New Hampshire came away with the first-set victory.   

Set 2: New Hampshire 25 - Maryland 21  
 
  • Maryland and New Hampshire played back and forth to begin the second set. Sydney Dowler recorded a kill, and the Terps and Wildcats were tied at 10. 
  • The Terps claimed their largest lead of the set after back-to-back kills by Sydney Bryant and an attack error. They led 17-14. 
  • New Hampshire tied the game at 18 after three consecutive scores.
  • The Wildcats pulled ahead late, scoring five of the final six points.  

Set 3: Maryland 25 - New Hampshire 23 
 
  • The Terps went on an 8-0 run to lead 9-3 with kills from Katie Scherer and Csire.
  • The Wildcats tied the game at 14 after going on a 6-1 run. 
  • Maryland won the set after kills by Eva Rohrbach and Csire. 

Set 4: Maryland 26 - New Hampshire 24  
 
  • New Hampshire jumped out to a 5-1 lead after going on a 4-0 run.
  • The Terps tied the Wildcats at 15 after a kill by Scherer and a service ace and attack error. 
  • The Wildcats pulled ahead with a 3-0 run after a kill and two attack errors. 
  • New Hampshire called a timeout after Rohrbach recorded a kill. The Terps trailed 20-18. 
  • Maryland came back to win after an attack error and kill by Anastasia Russ

Set 5: New Hampshire 15 - Maryland 12  
 
  • After Maryland took the first point of the final set, New Hampshire went on a 4-0 scoring run
  • Maryland went on a 3-0 scoring run, making it a 6-5 score on a kill by Eva Rohrbach.
  • Sam Csire picked up her 20th kill of the match, making it a 9-8 score in the set.
  • The Terps staged a late comeback, but ended up falling in the final set.
